Q about changing a reservation vs. booking a 1 way ticket

we're booked round trip to return on a monday,

For family reasons, we need to come back day before, on Sunday. There's a $200 change fee + extra for ticket difference, so that's why we're considering it; therefore, if we simply book a one-way on that Sunday, the question is:
will the airline penalize us in some way (cross-reference our two names in their system)?
If it's doable, then the Monday reservation to fly home would just be a no-show.
Thanks for any advice to this family which doesn't travel too often. Reply to this

It used to be that a one way ticket cost much more than half the price of a round trip ticket. Today, a one way ticket costs half the price of a round trip ticket, which means there is no penalty with purchasing two one way tickets. Make sure you confirm this for your airline and route. I routinely buy one way tickets and the airline doesn't care. However, buying a ticket at the last minute will still cost you much more.

I'm sorry not to be clear. We bought round trip tickets.
I'm thinking about buying one way and not "changing the reservation"
wou;d the airline realize we have two reservations in the system, I wonder, and thus penalize us.
It is just less $ to fly w/the one way vs. paying the fees
Thank you!!.

You should be able to compare your existing costs against a one way ticket price at one of many travel search sites such as Kayak.com. I'm pretty sure airlines don't mind you buying a second ticket for one way based upon my experience. If you book through the airlines reservation number you can ask the agent. Reply to this
