Trip To Germany
7 years ago, January 27th 2017 No: 1 Msg: #199484
Hey all, a friend and I would like to plan a at the beginning of summer. I would like to focus my time in a specific region, such as Southern Germany or Northern Germany. I have never traveled before on a scale like this and have no idea what to expect. Would anybody be able to give us some good advice, and/or provide us with numbers of what we are to expect cost-wise and maybe provide us with some sort of itinerary? Any help would be much appreciated! Reply to this

Hi

I've moved your post to the Europe forum where you are more likely to get replies.

To help you, can you tell us how long you have to spend in Germany?

Berlin and Dresden in the north-east. Munich, Neuschwanstein and the alpes in the south. Heidelberg maybe in the west. So many things to see.

You get good value for every budget. From nice youth-hostels (like 50 Euros per day all inclusive) to 5-star hotels (a few 100 Euros per day).

Inter-German travel can be easily done by train. Maybe reserve a seat. Alternatively take a rental-car.

You can select your destinations by topic: nature, history, culture, whatever you like.

Buy a good guide book like Lonely Planet.

You can do a 1 week visit in Chinese marathon-style or stay 1 month.

I can provide more help if you ask more specific questions. Reply to this

Dresden...wonderful Dresden that was such a difficult city for me for reasons that I dont need to go into.

I drove from Prague to the midst of Saxony for a particular reason and spent a few days in Dresden on the way back to Prague. Dont expect that many english speaking hotels around the smaller towns..you will find zero people in Reindorf who can speak more than a few words of english. Make sure you have a working Euro phone with net connection because the GPS on my hire car lost its mind in the ore mountains/needed a cross border software update. I dont do hostels but there are some decent hotels around 70 euro on the edge of town.

German public transport to most places is fantastic, Id reconsider hiring a car unless you need to and drive on that side of the road 😊

DB train app is handy..expect trains to run a few minutes late in Berlin...Carpool, Rideshares, Hitching (I dont condone it but bless the bunch of hitchers who spoke english and german I picked up while horribly lost out of Leipzig) is common but do it in a group - its hard not to stop and pick up people in minus 7c rain.

I HATED berlin upon landing their and tried every way possible to get out of there that day but trains cancelled and rideshares not showing up etc etc made sure I stayed there and I actually really enjoyed Berlin. Its a very workeable city. You would have a nightmare with a car in Berlin, I had hassles finding parking on the outskirts of Dresden at my hotel and there are such good transport networks a car is a PITA. Once I got out to working class Wedding and found places like Teirgarten to walk around in the fog and got lost at Alexanderplatz and found a house that looked perfect to photograph, ended up on the wrong bus and walked around the river spree houseboats and riverbank I thanked circumstance for those 5 days in Berlin. Totally different vibe to say Dresden or Leipzig.

Germany is a country that sort of makes you work hard for its absolute stunning heart...perhaps its easier if you are in Berlin and Munich etc...what is it that you hope to find or see? Reply to this
