Me and my two best friends are travelling to Europe this summer for four weeks. We've booked flights to and from, starting off in Amsterdam and then four weeks later returning from Paris... but what to do in between?!

This is the first time we've done a "european tour" and I was looking for some advice on places we just cant miss out on in other words are really must sees. We've talked about places we could go, but honestly we dont have a clue.

I was hoping to get your views on the best places youve been, the most beautiful, the best value for money, the most breathe taking sights, the most amazing adventures, the most fabulous nights out, the most delicious food.

Anything that you could share, any information at all that you think could be of use, i'd love to hear it!

Personally i recommend Belgium. From hearing where your starting point is and where your finishing point is Belgium would be easy to travel around. Brugges is the sweetest little city i think i have ever come across- countless candy stores, creperies, horse drawn carts, cobbled streets, flower markets, and not to mention the best raspberry beer in the world! I have been told Brussels is a must-see aswell, although i have never been myself.
If you are willing to pop over eastwards to Germany than i recommend Hamburg- beautiful, and not AS full as tourists as other areas of Germany. If you have the time pop up to Copenhagen: maybe you'll see the queen out and about on her bike! Such a friendly city.
Enjoy your trip! Reply to this

mmm....I don't agree with Juniper... if this is your first time in Europe, and want to know what are the must-sees, than I'd say south. Down to Spain, or better Italy, and France of course.

Oh, Italy is wonderful i agree- but such a long spanning country for so little time! I just recommended the places nearer to where your start and finish points are...4 weeks really is not that long at all you know! Best nights out are definitely Germany- Munich especially. Best value for money is also Germany (and i have been to a lot of places in Europe in order to come to that conclusion don't worry). Trains are also easy to use in Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands- it is the Thalys service (go to raileurope.co.uk to check this out). France of course has the TGV.

Hey thanks guys for your reply on this! well we sort of have a route planned. amsterdam to germany (perhaps berlin) then over the border just to somewhere in poland then down to prague the vienna, across to trieste in slovakia perhaps then milan then overnight train to barcelona. However i wanted to know if these really where the places to go as we're planning to do a pretty wide trip although we only have four weeks i know! aby places along this route you could suggest???? Smaller places instead of the big cities.. we're looking for a bit of variety like rual as well as city beaches as well as greenery.

Any places within these places you could recommend? any info at all is a great help. THANKS!!! Reply to this

We travelled by car, which meant we could cover ground alot faster, from Stuttgart to Prague to Vienna to Budapest to Ljubljana to Lake Bled to Piran (with a day in Croatia) to Venice to Salzburg back to Stuttgart in 23 days...and it was pretty rushed. I highly recommend Slovenia--it is stunning, friendly and easy to travel through. You can find decent rooms in Piran, which is a small village on the coast, if you book early. Food was great. Prague will bust your budget if you aren't careful but it is stunning. If you are up for it, I'd encourage you to consider biking...in the Netherlands, Belgium and/or Austria. I list all my advice at www.eurfirst.com, but given your start and end points, I'd suggest Brugge, southern Germany, Austria and Switzerland, Provence, the Dordogne, Barcelona and Paris via Mont Saint Michel. Give Paris at least 4 days, whatever it costs (Try the Hotel Excelsior http://www.excelsior-paris-hotel.com/ which is not fancy but clean and very conveniently located to the center of Paris and subway lines.) Have a wonderful trip. Reply to this

We're headed out thru Germany in a couple weeks -- I've heard great things about Munich & the Bavarian region. Was thinking you could check out monastery & convent stays for safe & cheap lodging: "Europes Monastery and Convent Guesthouses"). Was also going to mention that Croatia is still relatively inexpensive and very colorful & pleasant!

If you go with open expectations and opt for a mix of "big city" & "little villages" you're bound to have a memorable time ;-) Be safe & have fun!

Alright, listen to the European guy; since you're going to Europe in the Summer and are looking for some crazy time, you definitely wanna go to the beaches. So just head south.

Anywhere in the Mediterranean would be awesome. Just go as south as you can. Northern Europe is a very interesting place, but I wouldn't go there in the Summer when cities are empty cause everyone is going south anyways. Go to Portugal, Spain (Ibiza is your best bet) Sicily in Italy or the Greek islands. For some crazy time with really beautiful people and them house / progressive tunes, I would go to Ibiza in Spain or Mykonos in Greece. Greece has tons of islands you can visit (island hopping). Such a tiny country with half of Africa's coastline!!!

Let me know if you need any help. Reply to this

You've gotta go to London! As a Londoner I'm a little biased here but it's such a great city you need to allow for at least a few days here. Also, from London you can travel to France and Belgium by Eurostar (if you book early on www.eurostar.com you can get really good deals. Also if you guys are under 26 at time of travel you can get cheaper fares as a 'youth' passenger) Alternatively, you can travel from London to anywhere else in Europe with cheap flights from Gatwick, Stansted or Luton airports. Again, book early, Easyjet is best but Ryanair can be a bit cheaper - not as comfortable though!

While in London, it doesn't really matter too much where you stay but the more centreal the better. The tube network goes all across the city and runs almost round the clock so you'll be fine almost anywhere. London theatre is one of the main attractions of the west end and well worth doing. I work for a holiday company and I deal with London theatre. You can check out my blog there at http://blog.show-and-stay.co.uk/ for details of London shows. Also, they do sell good value tickets if you're interested The tickets are for show and hotel or show and meal, prices start from about £34 for dinner and top show tickets (www.show-and-stay.co.uk). Just added a couple of arrticles to this blog that you might be interested in: one is about cheap travel around London, the other is about free days out in London - if you're on a budget there are some good suggestions of what you can do in London for free.

I agree with Aristeidis, head to the Mediterranean - South of France is well worth a visit. Nice is amazing and it's just next to Cannes and Monte Carlo. You can visit the beautiful hills of Provence, take a trip into the Alps, go to the casino in Monte Carlo or go to the North of Italy by train. In Nice, the best place to visit is the old castle on the top of the hill. The views are amazing, you can see the old town & beach from one side and the port from the other side. It's really beautiful but is a good old walk up the steps. In the port in Nice there is a great chocolate factory (le confiserie florian), they do free guided tours in english then at the end of the tour you can sample everything. The chocolate there is seriously the nicest I've ever tasted, 100% natural, handmade and incredible! Also, while in Nice, the best ice cream can be found at 'Crema di Gelatto' next to the Palais de Justice in the Old Town. Seriously the best ice cream in the world! Quite often in summer people sit on the steps of the palais de justice late in the evening eating ice cream! Head to Waynes bar just 2 minutes from Palais de Justice (along the road from Crema di Gelatto) for a great night out. It's an American bar but they have good live music and a great atmosphere. If you're in the area in May, see if you're there for the Cannes film festival - good opportunity to go star spotting, and the Monaco Grand Prix (you can get tickets on day for 60 euros or pre-race days, usually the Friday, are much cheaper, around 15-30 euros). If you go to Monaco grand prix, get there early (trains get v busy) stay in Nice because MOnaco will be hideously expensive and DO NOT buy tickets from touts, it is illegal and they are pretty much all fake!

While you're in Paris, I would definitely recommend getting the train out to Versailles. It was the highlight of my trip to Paris. You can see the castle and the home of Marie Antoinette. Before you go to Versailles I'd recommedn renting Marie Antoinette (starring Kirsten Dunst) to get an idea of the story of her life at the castle. Will make your visit much more interesting.

Hope you all have a great time, enjoy your first trip to Europe! Let me know if you guys want any more suggestions or any more detail about Nice, South of France or London. Lived in Nice so can answer any Q's about that region of the Med. Reply to this

It seems like everyone is recommending his own country and it could be pretty confusing for the person that requested it. Reply to this

Well, Croatia has been choses by Lonely Planet, New York Times and many other newspapers and magazines as the top destination for 2007, especially Dubrovnik.

But now it is really the best time to come to Croatia because in a few years it will be overcrowded with tourists.
