In Canada last year I picked up luggage that looked exactly like mine! I returned it and got mine the next day. A few weeks later i lost my wallet. It must have gotten dislodged from my back pocket while hiking. I came across very few people so I don't think my pocket got picked. Luckily I always keep an extra ATM and credit card in my bag. More than lost or forgotten, we had to trash two backpacks worth of belongings because an airline's check-in bag cost increased drastically after joining an alliance (I will leave any names out). We had done the research on the costs, but their site had not been updated and we did not have time to wait, complain, or negotiate in order to make our flight.

These were the last of our belongings that we wanted to keep close while looking for the next country we would decide to live in, but paying the cost to check-in the bags would have been more than the cost of what we owned, so we decided the more rational move was giving it up. As we left our stuff in the airplane trash bins, two cleaning employees came up to us and asked us if we were really throwing it away and, if so, if they could take it. We emphatically said "Yes!" as we preferred it all go to good use rather than the trash. By the time we had checked-in and turned around, all the stuff was gone.

With hindsight -- I barely remember what was in those bags minus one item that I'm still looking to replace, and I think that says a lot about the long-term value of a lot of things we own. 😉 Reply to this
