Anti-Malaria tablets for Burma?

Have any people in the UK bought malaria tablets from an online pharmacy? Can people also recommend if you need to take anti-malaria medicine while travelling to Burma?

Hi guys,

I am travelling to Burma for 2 weeks soon. Firstly I wanted to know if you definitely need anti-malaria tablets for this location? I am travelling from the UK.

Also, the tablets were quite expensive in my local pharmacy, so I checked there are registered online pharmacies in the UK selling these tablets, are these safe and has anyone use this service before?

I found some reasonably cheap malaria tablets <snip>

It seems like the doxycycline malaria capsules <snip> are the cheapest one you can see here How can I find out if doxycycline is correct one for me or if I need another kind for Burma?

Any help will be appreciated, many thank 😊

Hi Sam,

What an exciting destination! When I first travelled to SE Asia, I also bought and took anti-Malaria tablets, but stopped as there is a limit to how long you can take them as well potential unwanted side-effects to just keep aware of when taking them. However, this is not to say you shouldn't take them -- this is up to your personal discretion.

Here is a non-commercial CDC link detailing various Malaria drugs and their pros/cons (http://www.cdc.gov/malaria/travelers/drugs.html)

As for using an online service for pharmaceuticals, I personally would prefer to go the more expensive route from a local pharmacy. If you can't double-triple-check that the online service is legitimate there are massive global scams to sell cheap and sometimes adulterated pharmaceuticals, not to mention the potential for credit fraud associated with these. So, make sure the service is legitimate and weigh out the pros and cons -- the final decision is really up to your discretion.

Most importantly, enjoy your trip!
Michelle

Hi
If you are in the UK you should at least be able to get advice from your GP. Most have a travel surgery and they can advise you on what injections and medication you need and what type is suitable for the area you are visiting.
This website is good for that, http://www.fitfortravel.nhs.uk/destinations/asia-(east)/myanmar.aspx
but I'd use your GP as the first port of call.
In some areas malaria is resistant to certain drugs, so you need to be careful. With doxy, if it is effective, you need to take it for the full month after you leave the malaria area. If you don't, you are not protected.
