What is your view on using tour guides vs. trying to do all of the research yourself?

I am all for pocket sized brief synopsis guides with area maps, I don't want to have to carry anything bulky. Reply to this

As a german I am happy with the english language Editions of Lonely Planet. What and how they describe in the destinations is very useful and good for me. With them I do individual travel and only rarely use tour guides. Sometimes the only disadvantage of a book compared with a printed Google map or obtained City map is the size and the weight but for me this is acceptable. Reply to this
