How much money for 3 months? Australia a good place to start? Advice..

Hello,

At a point in my life where I feel I need to find myself, i'm currently stuck in first job syndrome and want to see at least a bit more of the world before I settle down in a job I like. Hopefully looking to get out by Christmas and i'm mainly looking at either Australia or/and New Zealand, nervous about taking such a big leap on my own so could really do with some advice, tips and knowledge about travelling alone. If I were to fly out in January, how much would you feel I need to save up to go travelling for a maximum of 3 months, any reply would be very helpful.
Thankyou, Luke. Reply to this

Australia, as with other developed countries, is expensive compared to countries in Asia. Have you considered traveling around Southeast Asia for a couple months before Australia, and once there stay as long as you can until the money runs out...or you get a temporary job there to extend your time.

I hadn't considered it before but after looking into it, it does seem like the more logical choice. Lots of things to see and do to and like you said a lot cheaper. Where would you recommend starting ? Reply to this

Bangkok is a good hub with good transportation links including discount airlines (e.g., Air Asia) within the country and to surrounding countries, including to Australia. Another is Kuala Lumpur. Reply to this

Singapore is a great location to start traveling in Asia. It is small and easy to move around. Not too crowded and gives you time to acclimate. Good luck with your travels and we will be eager to read your blogs.

Totally agree with Bob. Australia is apparently one of the most expensive countries in the world so you will need a lot saved up to travel there long term. One option would be to get a working holiday visa and work there to support yourself, but perhaps that's not what you want!

South East Asia is a cheap and easy region to travel around. You can fly until Bangkok and then travel around Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Singapore, depending on what you want to do. There are very firmly trodden tourist trails in these areas with lots of people doing the same and hostels and tourist agencies who can help you. You'll be able to afford a lot more there. Hello Luke,

If you are planning to have 3 months vacations I suggest you should go to country which is cheap yet beautiful. Following are ten cheapest countries for vacation purpose -

1. Cambodia
2. Vietnam
3. India
4. Bolivia
5. Hungary
6. Honduras
7. Bulgaria
8. Sri Lanka
9. Argentina
10. Greece

There are some travel videos, road maps, and lots of information about countries which you can use to plan your journey in a much better way. Check out <snip> where you can get thousands of tour guides, movies on traveling, different country's language course DVDs and a lot more.

Hi Luke!
I traveled solo to Australia in summer 2014 for 3 months and also took a trip to New Zealand during this time and it was amazing! I would totally recommend it!

In 3 months I spend about 3000 GBP but I did literally everything I wanted to do - skydiving, parasailing, sailing weekends, kayaking (plus my new zealand trip). I traveled through melbourne, sydney, canberra, townsville, the whitsundays, cairns, magnetic island, townsville in oz then I did a south island tour of new zealand. Australia is an expensive place yes, however, if you have never traveled alone before I would recomend it over places like thailand/ cambodia ect - just for peace of mind it is great. You can usually find cheap (ish) places and some of the hostels are great - I recomend Base they are all over the country!

I am traveling out there again too in january and move to auckland, new zealand at the end of feb - if you want more information regarding travel in australia or what I got up to you can visit my blog at <snip>
Hope this helps!
