Hi All!

Going travelling around South America from April this year and want to go down to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego in May. I've seen some pics on this site from others who have been there and it looks incredible!!

Does anyone have any advice on how is best to get there? I've read in a travel book that there are some flights down to Ushaia but I have not had any luck in booking one yet. Is flying best or are buses still fine at that time of year?

Any advice on this would be awesome.

Thanks!

It depends how long you have got. Ushaia is a long way from anywhere. I haven't done the journey in May, I travelled through Patagonia in January and February but I flew down to Ushaia and then bused it back up. If you did bus it down through Argentina you could then catch the ferry that runs from Punta Arenas in Chile up the coast of Chile. If you are not in a hurry, my best advice is just to arrive in Argentina or Chile and work out your best options when you are in the area. Reply to this

We rented a car in Bariloche and took Route 40 to the end of the world. That made all the difference. You can stop wherever you'd like along the way, and we crossed over to the carretera austral in Chile at Futelefu, then crossed back over to see Cuerva de los Manos and a whole lotta glaciers and even adopted a dog. Camped almost every night. Eventually we made it to Ushuaia. Took us a month, but we were very pressed for time on the way back up. Two months would have been better. Driving is stressful in cities, but there really aren't any cities between Bariloche and Ushuaia... I just got back from that trip two weeks ago, and I'm still catching up on my journal, but if you're interested you can check out my stories.
