Teaching Abroad with previous criminal record

How hard is it to get a job outside of the US with a criminal record (DUI).

I am a US citizen with a criminal record (DUI) and I would like to teach outside of the country. The conviction was only three years ago. Are there countries with less restrictions regarding criminal records/DUI and work visas?

Any advice you can offer is appreciated! Reply to this

Hi Fran,

Yes you can work as a teacher abroad with a criminal record, I am a current teacher and have taught in several countries but I don't have a criminal record, but there are countries like China, Vietnam and South Korea that are very strict on background checks so those countries I would say no. I know not all countries do the background check in this biz. You should do your research first on which countries half-ass it and the ones who do a thorough background check for teachers. I would venture to guess you can find something. Good luck! Use teacher forums to get a realistic idea from other teachers as well. Reply to this

You might want to look into Canada or Australia. But I think you should first look into embassy sites and articles regarding your search. Reply to this
