Where to stay if you travel around Chile?

Hello!
In august I'm going to travel around Chile. Start from Atacama all the way to Patagonia. Can anyone tell me where one can stay during such a trip? Are hostels in Chile safe or is it better to stay in a hotel? Do you recommend a specific hostel or hotel or another accommodation option? Or do you maybe recommend some place that I have to see when I'm in Chile? Please, I will be very thankfull for any help I can get! 😊
