Hiya, we've been to cairns a few times and they have a pretty big range in accomodation styles. If youre happy to be in a more backpacker style and out of the action (and i guess you will need a car), perhaps look at some of the apartments at Trinity beach. This is a lovely little beach about 20 minutes north of cairns city and just before Palm Cover where the 5 star resort and golf course is. Trinity beach has a lovely grass area along the beach, a playground, a pub across the road with impressive ocean views and a couple of cheapish cafes and restaraunts.

Man, that sounded really salesy and i'm sorry about that. But i think that would be cheaper than in the city. In saying that, if you dont have a car then you'll probably need to stay in the city. We stayed at the novatel one time which was beautiful but dont think it will meet your self catering requirement. You can however easily walk to anywhere in the main city area incl cheap food at the foodhall and there is a wonderful manmade lagoon on the foreshore so you can go swimming there (you cant swim on most of the beaches due to stingers and crocodiles). There are heaps of accomodation options though as cairns is a super touristy location.

There seem to always be sales for cairns accomodation too so maybe sign up to some websites once you find a couple you are interested in.

Were currently in the Cairns area, we also stayed at Port Douglas, but without a car it wasn't easy to get around, but if you have a car it is also fery beautiful there. The best place we have stayed so far is Villa Marine in Yorkey's Knob, about 10 minutes outside of Cairns. Great place with all self catering equipment. We found in Cairns there was no beach, so after a few days headed out to Yorkey's Knob where there is a beautiful quiet beach. We didnt have a problem with stingers, but made sure we always swam inside the beach net. The area is good, plenty of places to eat and a little supermarket. Nice and quite, but if you do want to head into Cairns, there's a bus. Just one tip, if you're ordering at the local pizza joint, one is enough for two!
Have a good time. Reply to this

Been to Cairns many times over the years and most recently for 6 weeks prior to Xmas, if you have transport (which you really need to have unless you are happy to rely on buses etc) we would recommend Trinity beach. Not far out of Cairns, close to major shopping centres and has a a few great eateries right on beach which cater for all tastes and 'values'. Accom will vary from 21/2 start to 5 star...you have a great choice. Reply to this

I highly recommend Port Douglas, it is good for any budget high or low... Also great access to the barrier reef

If you're set on staying in Cairns though, I'd recommend Palm Cove Reply to this
