Any suggestions on where in Southeast Asia a family of 4 (with kids aged 2 and 4) should spend the holidays?
We have from the 15th of December to the 15th of January to dedicate to an easy (and not too expensive) Christmas and New Years break from our backpacking adventures across Southeast Asia. We will have already made our way through Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Northern Thailand. Where do you propose we move on to next?
We had originally planned to spend a month in Burma, but that is proving logistically unappealing and so we need a plan B. (Only Kid-friendly suggestions please! And we don't mind staying put in one place, for a lovely change, as long as beaches are within easy reach...)
Looking forward to some good ideas...
THANKS!
Reply to this May I suggest a part of SE Asia that's a little off the typical tourist path: Sumatra. Air Asia flies there for great prices. Many towns on Indonesia's biggest island have large Christian communities that will be celebrating Christmas which may allow for some tradional aspects too. Sumatra offers tons on beaches, volcanoes, wild orangutan spotting, and a truly unspoiled landscape that's harder to come by in other parts of SE Asia nowadays. I wrote a couple blog entries recently on Sumatra if you'd like to read a little more. Enjoy the holidays wherever you end up! :-)

Hi there Wandering Kahns.... I believe you're in to new adventures and experiences. You can visit our country, the Philippines in South East Asia. We have historical places of great significance, beaches, country side adventure, nature trip... The jeepney, our most common mode of transportation was featured in the Hollywood Film The Bourne Legacy this year. Some parts of the capital of our country was also featured.
Our country is covered in large bodies of water that it offers refreshing and beautiful white beaches and the like. During Christmas seasons small children and group of people goes house to house to sing christmas songs to practice caroling.
I hope you will have a great time in ASIA....

Hi, we are a family of three with a 10 year old and will be ending our 4 month journey in Malaysia. It is fantastic! We started from Tokyo, moved through Japan to Korea, China, Vietnam (which is great) and will be going into Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and ending in Malaysia in January. We have been there before and it caters very well for the children. However, we did go there two years ago when our daughter was eight and she was photographed incessantly!

Taiwan! Weather here is a hit or miss, so it might be a little wet or rainy during that period, but there's sights abound in Taipei! And if it does get too wet, Southern Taiwan is much warmer+sunnier and offers more local character, cultural attractions, and an amazing beach in Kenting. Another place to consider 😊
Reply to this Thanks to all for your input... We ended up in Malaysia and have no regrets! Loved Christmas in Penang and had a super fun start to 2013 in KL...
To the Andrew Family: perhaps we'll see you here? We will be back in Penang soon... spending a week in Batu Ferringhi from Jan 10th to the 16th. It sounds like you have been doing a very similar trip to ours! It would be fun to swap tales over a bowl of hawker food...
Reply to this Hi, glad to hear you had a great Christmas. We are currently in Langkawi and will be heading to Penang next. We fly out of KL on the 26th, so we are just working out our next destinations now. Would love to catch up.
Reply to this Hi, have just booked three nights at the Noordin Mews from the 10th. Thanks for the recommendation - it looks good. Do you want to catch up on the 11th?
Reply to this Ha! We leave the Noordin Mews on the 10th to spend our last week in Malaysia on the beaches of Batu Ferringhi (the northern part of Penang.) Should still be easy to meet up though and the 11th sounds fine... We'll be checking out of room A by lunchtime. If we don't hear from you by then, I'll leave you our Malaysian mobile no. at the front desk!
