Fiji - a must?

To go or not to go

Hi, we're going RTW in a few months and I've heard different views about Fiji ie it's expensive and hard to get to/around. We'll be going to Bali and Thailand amongst others before hand so will be seeing plenty of great beaches. What else is there in Fiji?
I'd be grateful for any advice and opinions on whether it's a definite must or an okay to miss
Thanks, Ruth Reply to this

Hello hello. I have not been to fiji. HOWEVER, I recently realised I'll have to go there instead of samoa, so I started looking it up. I eventually became quite obsessed and have read millions of reviews. The main island itself I only want to stay on long enough to do the feejee experience- a four day trip where you get to spend a day trekking in the rainforest, through a river then eventually jump off waterfalls. then sandboarding, then mud pools, visiting orphanages/schools and river tubing. outside of that I definately want to go to waya island and nacula island due to this blog

put that in your address bit and if your not convinced by that then I'll never convince you. It sounds amazing enough to me! Reply to this

Bula! (Hello in Fijian)
Just came back from Fiji, had a lovely time overthere, plenty of great beaches of course but not only that, wonderful people, great snorkelling,... We visited a lot of great places on Viti Levu. (Coral Coast, Garden of the Sleeping Giant, firewalking on Beqa Island,...)
We also stayed on a very beautiful small island on the north coast of Viti Levu: Nananu I Ra. It's tropical paradise with all the things you can expect from a pacific island: pristine beaches, crystal clear waters, rainforests... Have a look at the Lonely Planet, there are a couple of Backpackers hostels, we stayed at Safari Lodge, and were very happy...
As the locals say: "Vinaka Vakalevu"!!!

Hi there,
We spent a couple of weeks in Fiji in November and had a fantastic time. While most people spend their time island hopping we chose to spend longer in fewer islands. It was great to spend a few nights in the same bed instead of backpacking so much!

I would highly recommend Nacula, one fo the smaller more northern islands in the Yasawa's. Its two boat journeys to the nearest town and theres only electricity for a couple of hours a night. Think the island from Lost! Absolutely nothing to do but swim and lie in a hammock taking in the sun. Snorkeling there is fantastic too!! Ofcourse a trip to Fiji wouldn't be complete without a night on the party island Beachcomber but don't make the mistake of staying there too long and thinking that that's all Fiji has to offer.

Endless white sandy beaches, clear blue water...paradise! Reply to this

Hey,

I've been to Fiji twice now, loved it both times. Sure, alot of places on the mainland are pretty grotty but the lifestyle, the native people and the atmosphere makes it beautiful. The native Fijians are amongst some of the friendliest and most welcoming people in the world. They are always willing to share with you their hospitality, culture... and Kava!

If you fly in to Nadi (Nandi) avoid staying at the Capricorn Hotel. Food was terrible and the rooms smelt like public toilets. I recommend Tanoa International.

Shopping in places like Sigatoka and Lautoka can be stressful, make sure you hold onto your posessions and watch out for cons! Shop owners will do anything to get to your money.

If it's scenery your after check out one of the 350 islands that make up Fiji. Theres plenty of beautiful island resorts to stay at and you can spend time snorkling, swimming, kayaking, fishing, sailing, windsurfing, skiing etc. I recommend staying at Plantation Island Resort on the island Maolalailai - part of the Mamanuca Islands. Tropical paradise! I stayed there for a week, the staff and service are fantastic, they will keep you entertained. Good place to take the kids too.

As quoted above, "sandy white beaches, clear blue water.. paradise!"
