18 hours (overnight) in Singapore - should i stay at the airport or go in to the city?

My plane lands at 4:45pm in Singapore and my next plane leaves at 10:45am the next day. My question is, do i go in to the city and have a quick look around, have a nice dinner/ have a drink etc stay at a hotel in the city then return to the airport the next morning? Or given the time constraints should i just stay overnight at a hotel at the airport?

Hello everyone!

This is my first time overseas and therefore first time to Singapore.

If i do go in to the city i would want to stay in a great location close to good food and bars - any suggestions?

Also, generally what time do clothing shops close in Singapore? It is a Tuesday that our plane gets there...

Any advice would be very helpful 😊 Reply to this

Hi Liv,

I did a very similar overnight stopover in Singapore a few months ago.

I had booked a room at the airside transit hotel, but went through immigration and into town to go to an exhibition. Worth it even if only for a few hours. My flight the next morning was about 7:15am, but the hotel is only a few minutes from the departure gate.

If you do the same, better to book the transit hotel in the terminal you are flying out from, even if you arrive at another. Your baggage can be checked through to the final destination if it is the same airline.
There is heaps to do at Changi airport, and there are shuttles between the terminals.

Recommend getting a taxi into town rather than the train. Trains are easy to navigate, but take a bit longer. Taxis were cheaper than I expected.

I arrived later than you though, so can't comment on what peak hour traffic is like in Singapore. Reply to this

I would also stay at the transit hotel in the airport. If you are tired when you arrive, there are a lot of good restaurant options at Changi, and it's fun just to walk around. It's a BIG airport with a lot of things to do.

If you go into town, plan on paying about S$25 each way. I would ask to go to Orchard Road, where there are a number of upscale clothing stores, and huge malls. Alternatively, head down to Bugis Street.

You are never more than ten feet away from a restaurant or food stall in Singapore, and it's all good. Food stalls are closely regulated by the government, so it is safe to eat anywhere. Reply to this

Hi Liv,

I would just add that Changi is such a great airport and never sleeps so your other option is to leave luggage in secure lockers, go to town, have fun and com back in the early morning and wait in one of their amazing and very comfy lounges with TV and restaurants around. It will save you cost of hotel if you travel on low budget:-)

But definitely go out to town - fabulous place:-)

I advise everyone to go out and capture the beauty of this city. Don't worry about safety or boredom. Singapore is the safest country and one can enjoy night-life of Singapore. So if you have a chance then enjoy your 18 hours. Reply to this
