An under-appreciated genre of classical music from the 15th and 16th century.
Polyphony is a musical style where two or more melodies perform simultaneously or in alternation. This style reached its peak in Venice in what is known as Venetian Polychoral when the constraints of St Mark's Church forced choirs to be separated into smaller ensembles.
The result is my most loved form of classical music. Let's start with my favourite proponent of this genre - Giovanni Gabrieli (1553 – 1612) and the
Magnificent a 14.

Reply to this Here is a piece by Giovanni's uncle, Andrea Gabrieli (1533-1585) - so much talent in one family. This is the
Magnificat octavi toni.

Reply to this Shane, these are fantastic pieces--thanks for sharing! This is also my favorite genre of music, so now I'll have to learn how to upload a treat to this site--maybe Tomas Luis de Victoria's Requiem.
Reply to this Here you are Tara, my favourite piece from Victoria's Officium Defunctorum. There is a bit of extraneous noise at the beginning, but it improves after that. Fantastic!
Reply to this Oh Shane, I just achieved Nirvana with de Victoria. I love the simplicity of acapella polyphony and following the threads of voices as they weave around each other. Thank you so much!
