This is a tough one. I have spent the last 20 minutes in contemplation, and I am totally lost. Yes, the Taj Mahal, Blue Mosque, Sagrada Familia are stunning, but I am sure there are gems out there that are truly picture perfect. What better collection of judges could one ask for than this community of passionate travel addicts. Reply to this

Agreed. A tough one.
I believe the Sydney Opera House is a beautiful piece of architecture.

I suspect once we get to see the Taj Mahal we will find it to be an amazing building.

Taj Mahal, is definitely my number one, nothing else can compare - I arrived before sunrise and left after sunset during my visit there in 2004. My first sight though was the prior day when my visit coincided with the rarely offered night visits, and so I was able to witness the building and grounds under the gleam of a bright moon - stunning almost beyond words.

For buildings constructed in the past 50 years, I would rate this place - the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, UAE as my favourite. Reply to this

That Mosque in Abu Dhabi looks truly spectacular in your pictures. I'd seen it on Discover T&L, and it looked huge, but almost too new. Good nomination thanks.
Any picture perfect castles in Eastern Europe or Chateaux in France? The golden pavilion in Japan? - Kinkakuji. Reply to this

The Golden Pavilion (or Temple) in Kyoto is lovely, but mostly due to the grounds, rather than the temple.

The Palace of Versailles is truly spectacular, but I don't have any digital photos, however its near equal would be the Alhambra in Spain, albeit in a different style. Reply to this

What a great thread and beautiful pictures. I agree with The Travel Camel about the Alhambra. I would like to add the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca. The opulence and beauty of this is amazing, as is its location on/over the Atlantic.

I would also like to add Sagrada Familia in Barcelona. I know it was listed in the initial posting on this thread, the outside is the most photographed and recognized. Yes, is nice, but for myself the interior actually lifted my spirit that day. The sun and light inside were most unexpected.

Although I agree that the Taj is incredibly beautiful, we actually had a better overall experience at the Golden Temple in Amritsar. As most of the people there are for spiritual reasons rather than touristic ones it had a better atmosphere in my opinion.

I'll also agree that Sydney Opera house and the harbor are ridiculously photogenic... serious smoke coming off my shutter around there....

Recently though, the two buildings that have amazed me are St Basil's Cathedral in Moscow and the Church of Our Saviour on Spilled Blood in St. Petersburg. The latter was also absolutely breathtaking inside being covered in beautiful mosaic,
