What was your favourite blogger, photographer, blog, photo, forum topic, TravelBlog new stuff, other good TravelBlog things of 2011?
12 years ago, December 21st 2011 No: 21 Msg: #149131
This time of year is always difficult for me because throughout the year I've read so many wonderful and worthy blogs. This year will be a bit easier because we had the monthly treasure hunt but I always worry about forgetting a great blog, blogger. I am a fan of many.

Mel said she tried to keep it to 5.....what a silly goal. No way! I could not do it.

This year one of my favorites is from an unknown blogger atomic man. His blog transported me to Scotland with him and I long to go see what he saw. Home from home.

Another one of our favorites (always) is EdVallance. Just about anything he writes is quality work and transports you to new and interesting lands. We really hope to meet him some day and thank him for his great writing. The beginnings of a 5000km trip across Siberia, NOT on the Trans-Siberian was one of our favorites and we find Ed to be a bit of a philosopher. We'd still like to make a donation to his friend Peter if Ed can figure out how we can get the money to him safely.

ThreeFitty always has nice blogs and consistently amazing photos. One I was particularly charmed by was Orange silks and blue skies - Vietnam, Mui Ne

Slowfeet are now back in Australia enjoying family, friends and thinking about building another home so their feet are slow now. They did a slew of quality blogs this year but some of my favorites are about the US. So many bloggers come to the US for two weeks, never leave LA and SF and make impressions about the entire country. Dave and Pat traveled for over 4 months and learned a great deal about the country, people and politics. I value their impressions and one of my favorites has been Laid Back Louisiana.

There are a few who have written insightful blogs that make one ponder our intentions JessM and her blog is wonderful Wracked with doubt but armed with a sense of duty

TBRich most recent blog Dreaming in the Golden Land thoughtful, insightful and powerful contemplation.

laetitiaaroundtheworld She is living the exciting thrilling life- full of travels and diving. Her diving blogs are great but my favorite this year is Simply thrilling: canyoning to the Dead Sea shores

There are two writers who always make me laugh bvchef and cabochick. Andrea has a wicked sense of humor and one could recommend any number of her publications. Her recent one The Pearl of Siberia is great. She has a way of spinning a story. Brendan writes as if he is having a conversation with you and his humor is evident in his writing. We first started reading his work back in April when he had taken a trip to Spain and Morocco. This trip included a dose of bad luck when someone snatched his ATM and left him on the road and penniless but he kept his humor and trooped on.2.80 € 2.80 Eurosand Traveling in Tangier You actually have to read several of the days to have the full impact but he had a great time and tossed those lemons out. Plus he is a foody and always takes great pictures of the foods he is experiencing.

This year brought us the Amazing Dancing Dave We love every single blog he has produced but my favorite still remains Why are we going to Timbuktu? As stated, "it was It was an idea that I watered and like a desert flower it bloomed and was glorious."

Chris and Nikki continue to include us in their wonderful travels and we all enjoyed Our Wedding Day at The Ice Hotel-By Chris because of the special occasion and the great photos but one that we particularly enjoyed was Our Honeymoon Part 1. A well done food blog. We also loved the photos from Our Honeymoon Part 1. In this one the photography was elevated to a higher level. Amazing shots. And don't forget this one Our Honeymoon Part 1 for its uniqueness.

We always know we are in store for a good blog when we see something new from Wanderly Wagon. Loved his series of blogs from Turkey and in particular --
Hot Air Balloon Ride - Goreme, Turkey. One of those perfect days.. Excellent blogs.

Overlanders are enjoying their travels and have introduced us to coach surfing which we will try next year. They have seen some marvelous things. They took the time to see small town America Adventures in Geological Fantasylands

Stephanie and Andras have not written much this year but the artist always comes out in their photos and love of flowers. The Central Icon of Spring Dave and I are looking forward to meeting them.

Maisondubonheur Peter and Mari hop around the world and stay in the most amazing places because Peter knows the "art" of working a deal. Peter, Mari and the kids are lovely people and we loved La Habana! and Diving the Great Divide

One of our absolute favorites this year International backpacker and the Gorillas dont know the rules!
We describe this adventure as utterly fantastic!

zofka has great insight into a decaying city and I will never look at Detroit the same way again. Her writing has changed my approach to this kind of city. Detroit, the Motor City

I always enjoy deleted_46288 opinions and writing style. One of my favorites this year was null blog 638040. Nick wrote this one from the heart and showed his sensitive side plus it was fun to learn more about weddings. I wish we could have met you when we were in Vietnam. I went there to gain a better understanding of the country where my brother spent the last year of life. He was killed in during the Vietnam war and I'd love to hear your insights concerning action.

As much as I enjoyed seeing Shane fall off the elephant The Travel Camel my favorite blog of his this year was A Splendid Isolation. I've always been intrigued by this location and this well written blog has peaked our interest even more.

Home and Away Bob is a prolific writer and we have enjoyed his blogs from the past. One of our favorites is Around the World by boat in 1958/59 Take a look. That would have been great making that kind of trip in 1958. Love the fashions. What a life Bob and his family have had. Can't wait to chat in person and hear more stories.

Sheila is the coolest and having some great adventures. The Great Walsh of China All of her blogs are worth a read but one of our favorites is There's Something About Xinjiang.

thedribbleman wrote a very nice summary of his time in Africa My thoughts on 10 months in Africa
Lots of adventures.

Marvellous Mongolia was my favorite from MichaelnFaye Excellent writing and photos. We've read this one a few times.

liliram is consistent in her writing but my favorite this year was BHUTAN: One Off My Bucket List and Bicol Express and Other Bicol Food Treats and love the photos. She has done a series of travels around her country this year and we have moved the Philippines up on our list because of her writing. We will go to explore the Philippines next year and hope to meet her!
And this most recent one was grand. BHUTAN: One Off My Bucket List

This blog Hungry in Peru caught my attention early in the year and I've been a fan ever since. yogabbagabba

Ok- Ok-- yes I know I read too much! I try to read at least one before work and couple at lunch and one or so when I get home from work. It is good to know what others are up to....especially when we are working and not traveling.

I'll bet I wake up at 3am remember someone else I wish I had placed on this list.
My year has truly been enhanced by each of you and many more I'm sure.
I love reading Travel blog.

Thank you Ali.

Thank you Jo and Mell for all your hard work to keep us moving along.

First of all, thanks Ed for nominating me, I don't deserve it, but it is an honour anyway.

On my part, I shall yet again nominate EdVallance since his writing is always good and he is the most adventurous of all the bloggers out there. Also I will nominate cabochick and aspiringnomad, different styles but both good.

Also my friend TouristTim whose writing is cynical and sarcastic, just the way I like it.

There are many more out there, including liliram and D MJ Binkley who I have not mentioned yet, but one has to stop somewhere and I have only just come home and haven't had time to do much reading on travelblog. Reply to this

I love the forum topics by intrepid new bloggers regarding job notices, packing bags, or counting down to the first anticipated trip.

RoelAnka's fantastic photography made my day. There are many animals that frequently appear on TB, but this couple managed to capture some of these same creatures in interesting new perspective--tongue sticking out, shaking off rain, and many more shots requiring tremendous patience or luck. I do hope they return to travel sooner rather than later.

I'm totally hooked on the following blogs for interesting location, photography and writing: FreeSpirit, The world is my oyster and the uncensored blogs by Go where the pepper grows.

Other bloggers I'm hoping will blog sooner rather than later are Cessna152, taracloud, Delek Delek, Rutabagabond and too many more to list lest I reveal how much of a TravelBlog junkie I am. ;]

Thanks to Ali, the moderators, and the guys behind the scenes who enable TravelBlog to exist in the first place. Reply to this

In response to: Msg #149097 Cheers mate😊 I think I'm a bit out of step with most being probably a bit older and considerably grumpier. Never mind, it's a tough job but someone has to do it😊 LoL. I do think I deserve a special merit award from TB for nearly 90,000 hits on the Philippines post. Reply to this

My favourite new TravelBlog feature of 2011 is that the replies I get to comments I put on blogs now appear on my news feed. Very useful, as I am sure I likely missed lots of replies, before this handy feature came alone to keep track of them. 😊 Reply to this

I should have said that my favourite feature of TB is the support given by Ali and Mell.

TB occasionally has its issues and glitches, but compared with the major social media sites the support provided is infinitely superior (btw read my post to see why I have permanently deleted my Q's World page on Facebook).

So Ali and Mell have my overall vote. Thanks and a Happy New Year😊 Reply to this

I think, that is one of the 2 nicest compliments I received in 2011. Thanks Geoff 😊
The other was from somebody who said in response to a post I made, that she had been hoping I would post on her thread, as she had read some of my other posts around the place and liked them. 😊

I agree with the above and want to add Jo to that list. Jo has helped me enormously this year and I appreciate her work!

The quick responses and attention to issues is what makes Travel blog a great community.

Same to you Cate and Benn. New Years Eve will probably be great in C and S America. As far as I noticed the times I was there, parties and night life are such a major part of life there, that New Years Eve has to be a highlight of the year. 😊

I think, probably more discussion goes on in the comments section of blogs, than does on the forums. Comments seem to happens so much more frequently than forum posts. 😊 Reply to this

Photos say a thousand words and there are many threads in the photography forum that I really enjoy. Some of the favorites.

Birds of a Feather

Faces in Places

My mother in-law sunsets

People of the world at work

Camels

Bicycles-- art or transportation....although I must be one of the few because there has not been much participation. I like this one anyway.

Dancing around the world

Beer around the world

... bit older...

Not everybody here is young. In fact, many of us arent. I am 42.

I do think I deserve a special merit award from TB for nearly 90,000 hits on the Philippines post.

I made a suggestion about an award for those who are the causers of extraordinary happeings on TravelBlog. In fact, the suggestion was inspired by your blog about the Phillipines. It could be like a pass the baton type award, where the causer of the most recent stirr holds it, and then it gets passed to next. Or, maybe all those who gain a reputation in unusual ways could hold the award. I dont know if this award will happen yet. 😊 Reply to this

My 2011 Travelblog favorites are:

DMJ Binkley D MJ Binkley and
Slowfeet Slowfeet
both of whom I have followed since they were in Rome when my son was studying there. Slowfeet provided very useful advice about an upcoming trip to Central and South America. Dave and Merry Jo continue to blog about their new home in California. I wish Slowfeet would write more now that they are back in Asutralia after their 3 year RTW trip.

Chris and Amy Chris and Amy,
Scottandanny scottandanny,
The Road Is Calling Theroadiscalling,
SculforandJupp SculforandJupp,
Raelen Raelan, and
Gillie and Carson Gillie and Carson
all who have provided very entertaining blogs about Asia, New Zealand, Central and South America; destinations that I plan to visit in the near future.

Cockle deleted_46288,
TinkandLaura Tink And Laura, and
TBRich TBRich
who are or were teaching English as a Second Language in Vietnam, Korea, and Thailand, respectively, who I began to follow when my son was interested in doing the same thing in Asia. They truly love their adopted countries, and their experiences are fascinating. As for my son having just graduated from college, he is currently on a flight to Tokyo and then on to Thailand where he will take the CELTA course and then teach until at least June.

And finally,
EdVallance EdVallance and
thedribbleman thedribbleman
whose adventures to Siberia and Africa are legend.

I applaud DMJ Binkey and Cockle who plan to or are entering blogs for previous trips when they aren't blogging about current trips.
