Advice for an American woman in Medellin

Hello! If anyone has any advice for a woman considering living/working in Medellin for a year I would greatly appreciate it. Is it safe in the rural areas where the schools are located? (Colegio Britanico)

(Colegio Britanico) I don't know the exact barrio that it's in, but I've heard some bad press about the rural areas on the outskirts of the city. Anyone have any info? Reply to this

Hello, I live in Bogota, Im a black American Guy so I don't stand out as gringo until I speak, I don't know Medellin well, but Ive only heard good things about Medellin, and it seems to me there are alot more extranjeros in Medellin vs Bogota. Judging by Bogota, some of the small cities around Bogota feel safer than actually in the city. Actually someone recently was telling me the Cafeteria areas around Medellin even though rural are very safe. Have you been to Colombia before? Colombia is about as dangerous as you make it. When I say that I mean do not give people the opportunity. Don't wear or have anything that shows wealth, unless your in the wealthy area of the city. If you follow this, you will be safe, your entire time. I don't want to scare you, and Im not sure where you are from, but Colombians are VERY VERY distrusting of people, with reason, they are people here who look for opportunities. People try to talk to them in the streets they just keep walking like they did not hear anything. It seems so cold, but I had to learn the hard way that it is very necessary, do not trust people at first, I do not care how friendly they seem. I let a guy walk up to me, asking me something and he grabbed my phone out my pocket and ran. Never use your phone in buses, especially Collectivos and try not to use it in public in general (on the streets etc) Malls, restaurants etc are fine. Asise for that Colombia is safe for solo females, just follow closely what the Colombians do, and when you make friends here especially girls, PLEASE PLEASE talk to them and listen to EVERYTHING they tell you. I had 2 friends warn me about the only 2 negative experiences I've had, and I brushed it off as, there over precautious, , like I said bad experiences can be avoided! Meet people though work and groups like meetup.com, couchsurfing.org, language exchange groups, where you know there will be professional people, trust worthy, and I promise they will go out their way to take care of you. This is the Colombian way, unfortunately there are a few bad apples in the bunch, but hey thats everywhere right? Reply to this
