I will be in Cairns for 3 days in mid August with a friend. We will have been up in Port Douglas for 5 days doing all the tours. We would like to drive towards an area where we could go over to Dunk Island.
Any ideas anybody?
Time to drive down, place to stay (hostel), things to see.
Or other small day trips from Cairns south. Reply to this

Hello and welcome to the Forum!

Just to let you know that due to the massive cyclone Yasi that passed directly over that area earlier this year, the Dunk Island Resort (along with its sister property on Bedarra Island) is closed until April 2012. It may not even be possible for visit the island on a day trip, but even if you can, any island activities hosted by the Resort will be unavailable.

Information can be found here: Dunk Island Resort Bookings

Nearby Mission Beach was also impacted, but not as badly, so the situation is almost back to normal with the usual options of hotels, restaurants and tour operators. It will still be possible to take a day trip on a boat from there and cruise the area for picnic lunches on islands or snorkeling.

Inbetween Cairns and Mission Beach is the Mamu Rainforest Canopy Walkway, which may be of interest. Reply to this

Thanks for that information about Dunk Island. Due to the rain/floods I did change my itinerary for travel. Originally I was going to travel over road from Brisbane to Cairns, now I am flying from Melbourne to Cairns.

I will research the Mamu Rainforest Canopy walkway, it looks good.

Where else should I visit? Reply to this

In that part of the world, you must visit the Waterfall Circuit and Barron Falls up on the Atherton Tablelands, in addition to Daintree Rainforest (take a boat tour) and Mossman Gorge north of Port Douglas (home to the lovely Four Mile Beach). These are all north and west of Cairns. Reply to this

Crystal Cascades is out Redlynch way. Kuranda is a short drive north of Cairns. Mossman Gorge is breathtaking. I lived there for two years and always had things to do. Reply to this

Thanks
I am staying up in Port Douglas and planned to see Mossman Gorge, Daintree & Atherton Tablelands.
I don't know about the Waterfall circuit & Barron Falls - will research.
Crystal Cascades out Redlynch also I need to research.
I am planned to go to Kuranda - is there a train journey and is it worth taking?

I really want things south or west of Cairns - any other ideas? Reply to this

As an update, it appears that the closure of Dunk Island for accommodation will be indefinite. The owner of the resorts said that they cannot be reopened without an investment partner.
