The original plan was to try and travel around the world without flying. But on reaching Singapore from England, i decided the ludicrous prices charged by cargo ships could be better spent on other travelling projects. One of these is to attempt to walk from Lands End at the south-western tip of England, to John O'Groats, the northern most point of Scotland with my wife. This is a walking distance of around 1200miles and will take 92 days to complete, averaging around 15 miles a day.
I'll be camping every day and should be able to get my backpack down to 10-12kg. To keep weights down i plan on storing OS maps on my iphone and buying guides to the paths and trails along the way at Tourist Information Centres.
I was wondering if other people have attempted such similar long distance walks and what knowledge they can pass on, especially with the plan on using technology to guide me instead of heavy, expensive maps.
To give me an extra incentive, i'll be doing this for charity, raising funds for AICR an International Cancer Research charity.
I plan on using Travelblog to keep people updated as i progress, although i might not finish these blogs until after the walk has finished!
Reply to this Adrian,
This sounds like a wonderful journey. I hope you will blog here so we can read about your adventure. When will you start?
Reply to this Hello............yes i do plan to blog about the journey, although as i'm not planning on taking a computer with me, it might take a while before the blogs start appearing.
I'll start the walk towards the end of June, possibly June 22nd.
Reply to this It might be helpful to join the camping and caravan club - they have a lot of sites that are cheaper and some off the beaten track - some don't have toilets but you get a huge site book with all the information - good luck, it is quite a popular walk.
Reply to this Hello.........good minds think alike........i joined up with them earlier in the year when i realised it would be near impossible to camp all the way without using some of their members only sites in the Midlands. I'll be looking out for the book when i return home from Asia......i'm sure it'll be easy to spot in my pile of mail!
Thanks for the advice
