Coral Reef Restoration.

We have a blog from a coral farmer... well a volunteer :)

I saw a few brief excerpts on BBC wildlife documentaries, in Fiji groups were working to restore coral reefs by coral farming.

After storms, coral fragments are gathered, planted in sheltered nurseries, given 6 months or more to grow and then returned to the reefs where bleaching or damage from fishing have killed original coral.

I thought the idea was fantastic, and searched around for more info - not much out there - a few days ago - this blog popped up from Belize: "The baby coral are stressed out!"

So good to read about first hand experiences doing this. Reply to this

Thanks Ali! That's funny you should mention Fiji -- there is a professor in Fiji that Lisa works with who is doing a similar project... And they just recieved a new grant to continue the program! I hope others begin to duplicate this successful project! Reply to this
