I'd say that depends on how long you plan to be in Laos. I spent about a month in Laos and would liked to have even more time to travel around. Also it would be helpful to know what entry point you will be entering Laos. For example, if you are entering Laos from Cambodia, I would spend a few days in Don Det if you want to chill out. Take a day trip over to Khone Falls. From there you could head to Pakse. I would spend some time in Vientiane. It's got to be the mellowest capital of any country. There are great places to eat, you can go bowling, get a massage, drink great coffee, go to the Beer Lao brewery for a tour and tasting, etc. If you are a party animal, then you will want to spend some time in Vangvieng. Lots of young and young at heart folks there that go tubing, kayaking and and cave exploring and drink lots of beer and consume various mind altering substances. From there you can move on to Phonsavan and visit the Plain of Jars. Head on to Luang Prabang which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Lots to see and do there. Check out Mount Phousi at sunset, go to the Palace Museum and check out the night market. While in the area, take day trips to The Pak Ou Grottoes, Kuangsi Falls and Tad Se Falls. Take a boat up the Mekong River to Ban Huay Sai. It is a nice relaxing few days and you will see village life and fishermen on the way north. From there, take a bus over to Luang Namtha and go trekking along the edge of the Nam Ha National Biodiversity Conservation Area spending the night in a hilltribe village and see how the locals live. Head over to Muang Khoua and from there take a boat down the Nam Ou River through beautiful karst mountain backdrops to the small laid back village of Muang Ngoi. Hike out to waterfalls and stroll by water buffalo on the way to check out a series of caves. That's just some of the great things to see and do while in Laos. Hope you have a great trip! Away from the cities, there is so much more to see; the Plain of Jars in Xieng Khuang Province, the forested mountains of Northern Laos, the gothic limestone karsts around the backpacker-haven Vang Vieng and in the deep south, past the market town Pakse, is Si Phan Don (Four Thousand Islands), where the mighty Mekong spreads out and all the hammocks are taken.
