First time going to Asia

Need advice for a clueless 18 yr old!

Hello, I'm an 18 year old from Canada going to my first Asia trip on April 24 for 2 weeks. I'm going to Bangkok, Hong Kong, Taichung/Taipei, and Seoul, spending 2 days in each place.
The thing is, I'm tagging along with my dad but he is going to this trip solely for business purposes and can rarely spend any time with me there. I just want to ask if these cities are relatively safe to walk alone for an 18 year old (otherwise, I would either have to follow my dad, or stay in the hotel). And if so, what places that are safe would you recommend me going to? Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Reply to this

Hey

In Bangkok you could arrange a city tour cheaply which would take you to places like the Grand Palace, Wat Po and Wat Arun. With a tour guide you (and your Dad) would feel more confident. Your hotel will probably be able to arrange one for you. With two days you could do a city tour and then perhaps a trip out to the floating markets.

It's not that Bangkok is dangerous, but there are a lot of scam artists out there who prey on newbies. Reply to this

Hi Jonathan,
Hong Kong is really easy to get around in, as all signs are in English (and Chinese). Very good communication network, with metro, trains, ferry - don't miss the trip on the ferries between Kowloon and Hong Kong island. Taking the cable car to Victoria peak is great fun, there is a sort of shopping mall at the top plus a viewing platform. In fact, Hong Kong is great for shopping, as there are many malls and markets. You probably will enjoy Ocean Park, with aquariums, dophin shows and fun rides.

There is a great tourist information site, called Discover Hong Kong, you can find it on the web and they also have offices in town. Hong Kong is safe, though Nathan Road has touts you should avoid. And with your father do go and see the Symphony of Lights, fantastic laser show. Reply to this
