Thanks for the compliment Ed. 😊

I wonder, if it is the actual making of the blogs we become addicted to, or the compliments and attention from our fans. What is everybodies opinion of that?

Well, if I was given the choice of either:
1) Continue to receive compliments/comments but write no further blogs or
2) Continue to write blogs but receive no further compliments/comments

Then I would choose option 2 - blogs for me are a creative outlet, and creativity (along with my health and freedom) are my most prized possessions.

Having said that, I greatly appreciate all comments on my blogs; that people are moved, inspired and intrigued enough to leave comments is extremely satisfying. Thus my preferred option is number 3:
3) Continue to write blogs and receive compliments/comments

I'll keep writing, so please keep the compliments/comments coming! 😊

I suppose the other part of the question was 'who looked at other people's blogs and thought I like all those messages I'll write a blog to get some of my own!'
I doubt anyone writes for that reason. It is wonderful to receive comments and compliments and it is nice to know other people read your blogs and they don't just sit there in cyberspace unnoticed; but who would write 1,000 or more words and take and post photos just in the hopes some stranger somewhere says 'well done'?
I think we all write for different reasons and we all enjoy a bit of praise, but the praise is not the reason we write. Reply to this

Some great blogs here people :-)

Personally I started writing so my family and friends back home can see what I'm up to. Its a really good feeling to know that they can follow my travels, and will make it easier for them to understand how important travel was for me.

The more I write the better I feel I express myself, but I think reading great blogs such as the above is a great way to understand what makes a blog special. So keep it up people :-)

Hmmm, that sounds a tad narcissistic, doesn't it? I think (most) bloggers write because of a need to express themselves. Others blog to make sure they document their travels, as memory aids to serve them well when mental faculties fail them (like me?). While comments and compliments are very welcome and encouraging, writing is really a form of expression that is, by itself, a "reward". Just my humble opinion. Cheers all around,

This is a complex and interesting question.

In the beginning it was 100% because we were doing a trip around the world and it was a way to keep in touch with friends and family as we traveled. Our work was geared toward that audience. It really did not cross our minds that others would take the time to read our work.

Over the past few years of writing blogs we do keep in mind that other people around the world may be reading this so we try to throw in an interesting tidbit.

There are times when we wish there was an option to publish a blog that would not go to our friends and family and we could write it with Travel Bloggers in mind. For example, we wouldn't mind publishing a blog about places we've traveled to in years past but we don't do that because friends already know about those trips and we don't want to make them read it again.

It is a great feeling when friends, family and other bloggers send a message or compliment. I love it when they take the time to comment.

For us it is like spending a day in the kitchen cooking together--- that is how we express our creativity.

I originally started writing blogs purely for my own selfish reasons; i wanted somewhere to keep records of my travels to remember when i'm old, grey and back wearing diapers again.

At first i wrote specifically for friends, by focusing more on me and the mishaps i got myself into, than the culture and the place i was in. Maybe it's been a natural progression, but now i find myself trying to write for a more wider audience, writing not only about my own escapades but also trying to describe more my new surroundings. I definitely think my writing has gotten better for trying to write to a wider audience!

I wish I was in the position to write for the compliments and attentions of my fans and to receive their comments, but until that day arrives, i'm more than happy using the blog for friends and as an outlet to try and improve my writing! Reply to this

Same as Adrian, I write blogs to help me remember the stuffs I did and experienced and the people I met during my travels. It lends a certain feeling when you go back, re-read, and re-live everything -- the good, the bad, pretty, and ugly. Although it is more for myself than anyone else, I try to add information that others may find helpful in case they do stumble upon my writing.

Lately, I find myself writing more about the larger scheme of things (when possible) rather than just focus on myself. My style of writing is also evolving and, I noticed, varies with the experience. So with or without an audience, I'll continue writing whichever way I want.

(But I do love receiving comments, as it tells me that my thoughts transcended the web.)
