some advice needed for anewbie to blogging.
13 years ago, March 21st 2011 No: 1 Msg: #131674
Right I will give you the background.
I am a middle aged guy, fairly widely travelled especially in Europe and in recent years the former soviet bloc countries though I have visited places under Soviet control in those days.
I have never written a blog but have contributed quite a number of trip reports on other Travel Forums.
I don't have a lap top or net book or any other Internet device to use whilst travelling and I really don't intend to get one
so here is what I am proposing.
My next organised Trip is the the Czech Beer Festival in May this year, this is now an annual event for me,this will be my third year in a row, last year I also managed a trip to their mini beer festival in September.
would it be reasonable to Blog away about my planning of the trip and writing a day by day account of what I did when I get back?
I will be based in Prague for a week but will be making day trips to the nearby town of Tabor (nice old fortified town) and Mlada Boleslav (Skoda car museum).
A lot of what I will be saying is about how we get to places ,the resturants and bars we try and most important for me the different beers tried. I also intend to visit a few of the many Prague parks (I have done this before) and spend a bit of time trying to get the more unusual pics of the city.I will not however be doing very much of the standard Prague tourist stuff.
so what do you think folks is this a goer.

Hello Craig 😊

would it be reasonable to Blog away about my planning of the trip and writing a day by day account of what I did when I get back?

That is exaclty what I do. I dont have a laptop or netbook either. I dont even have a camera. Mostly, I travel without these things, because I dont want to look after them. I like being able to kick my bag under a cafe table in the middle of having a coffee and then have it exactly where I left it after I come back after 10 minutes of walking around outside. It gives a lot of freedom to carry no valuables.

Most of my blogs are made up of emails I send from internet cafes while I am away to my boyfriend. This is also an easy way to blog for me, because I find it easier to stay interested in describing my trip, when I am speaking directly with somebody I know is interested in what I am doing. I usually take some photos of my visas, ticket stubs... to put with the blogs after I get home.

I will not however be doing very much of the standard Prague tourist stuff.

Blogging is personal in my opinion, so bloggers should write about what is interesting to themselves. And anyway, I think people are generally going to be more interested in a bloggers blogs if they get the impression that the blogger is interesed in and cares about what (s)he is blogging about. I make no effort at all to write my blogs for anybody but myself and my boyfriend and I still manage to get lots of recommends and subscribers.

I must admit I love my camera and since the Digital cameras came in it has changed the way I photograph things.I can take several 100 shots. On a walking trip to the Baltic states a couple of years ago i took over 1000 photos, most of which were total rubbish but i still managed to get some aboslute crackers.
I love using my photos as my screen saver.I also use my photos as my computer wallpaper and change them regularly,I also try to get a photo of me with a beer in every pub i visit, this is ok when I am travelling with friends but a bit more difficult when I am travelling alone.

I must agree with Mel. I think blogging's a very personal form of expression. Basically record whatever catches your fancy in whatever format and then share it when you have some time.

Hello Craig, I think every blogger here has struggled with this question at some stage, and it does come down to your personal preference - there is no correct or incorrect way, though some ways of blogging do get a few more hits - generally a reasonable number of words and pictures is the safest bet - of course what is reasonable is your opinion. I have seen blogs of 3000 or more words that have been a wonderful read, but unless you have a cracking story, this is too long. Likewise I've seen blogs with 100 or more photos, and unless the photos are mostly of wonderful quality, then it may be too many.

This thread from last year, New blogger looking for opinions has a short discussion on the same point.

As for information on writing style and making your blogs more 'readable' check out these two thread:
Writing for the Web - blog style tips
Tips for Increasing the Views of Your Travel Blog

Above all writing your blogs should be an enjoyable task - sure it takes work as writing your words and sorting through your best photos does take time - but if at the end of this process you feel satisfied and content with your creativity - then this should spur you to blog more! Reply to this

You are welcome! You will be surprised at how many people will read your blogs, especially if your photos are of a good quality. The first few blogs you write you may not get many views but over time it steadily increases, especially if you participate in the forums and comment on other people's blogs. My hits certainly went up when I participated in the forums, and went up again when I finally purchased a DSLR and started putting better photos on my blogs (I had similar photos before but they were on slides so couldn't put them here). If you ever have any camel photos, please post them on this thread: Camels! - one of my favourite threads!

There is nothing to stop you from writing about your previous experiences and putting them on here. Some bloggers write about their travels from twenty years ago.
