Shopping centers in Bangkok

Do you have a favourite? Which one and why is it your favourite? Are they all opened again, since the riot damge? Is there one I can get to via the river boat and a short walk? Is there one with a Childrens play area?

Hey Mell

There are several very close to each other, joined by walkways: Siam Square, the Paragon Centre and MBK are the three I can remember off the top of my head. They have different themes - Paragon is quite expensive for example, whereas MBK is cheap. Siam Square seems to have been designed for teenagers. They all have entertainment areas on the top floor with cinemas and arcades as well as food courts.

If you get the river boat to Saphan Taksin, you can get a skytrain from there to either National Stadium (for MBK) or Siam Square.

Cool!

Thanks Kate 😊 I havent visited any of them yet, even though I have been in Bangkok several times.

I like visiting shopping centres in various parts of the world. They are often good places to people watch, because they are so much a part of life for many ordinary city dwellers. 😊 Reply to this

May be I am late in posting, but if you visit Siam square, don't forget to go to the basement where they have a beautiful Ocean World. This place is amazing. Everything about sea life....we boated with sharks, clicked them from beneath with their beautiful teeth protruding......penguins dancing....Safari world is another 'do not miss' place. One full day was not enough and first time we say whale show..of-course dolphins and sea lion were also amazing. Your kids will love it...my kids had a great time.

Second, a visit to floating market is a must, there are many...choose the one that your reliable guide suggests.

Third, MBK beats all in terms of shopping, though there are many night markets also. Reply to this

Cool! That basement seems like something my 10 year daughter would love, Vikas. 😊

for sure, you bet !

Even the safari world is amazing. You can feed giraffes, watch the whale dance, sea lion show, dolphin show and monkey boxing.

My 6 yr old and the 1 yr old and the 30 yr old enjoyed it sooo much.

I live in Indonesia now. Let me see if I can put up something on Bali as well. Reply to this

We are also going to visit Sumatra. If you have any comments for the following thread Vikas, it would be great. 😊

Mell, already, but stil wondering why you picked up the most trivial of Indonesia. I mean, you have the charming Bali and Lombok, you have the diver's paradise Monado and you have the adrnalin pushing Komodo Islands.......and many more.

Have you heard about the Ocean Walk in Bali - the next best thing to diving. Have you seen the Gili islands in lombok ? so many more...... Reply to this

Mel, if you are going to be in MBK make sure you try the food court on the 5th floor. Very cheap and good quality (big portions too) Thai food. Buy your coupons at the booth (don't worry if you buy too many as they refund them) and then browse all the 'restaurants'. Well worth a try for you and your daughter.

Your daughter will probably like the displays they usually put on outside of Pavillion - at Christmas they had huge drummer bunnies. There are fountains outside and lots of people generally hang out in the square outside, it's a nice atmosphere and a good place to just people watch!

The other place you may be interested in is the Pratunam area, not too far away from MBK. This isn't a shopping centre as such but is miles of street market stalls selling bags, souvenirs, belts, t-shirts and trinkets. It's also the best place for a massage for your weary feet (after all that shopping!), all the massage places there are 100 baht for a foot massage and the same for a full body Thai massage. Well, I suppose I have different criteria to yours, when it comes to chosing a place to go. Places like Bali strike me as a bit too crowded with tourists. I want to see a quieter place, but one that gets just enough tourists to have some facilities, to make it comfortable for me when I have no home to go to.

Anyway, I will see Bali etc some time as part of another trip, but not this time. 😊

I think, I will make that my jet lag soothing plan, for the first day. 😊

Sounds like a good plan. Even if they dont have bunnies with it not being Christmas, there will surely be something she will like. Hopefully, there will be someplace shadey for me to sit. I spend too much time standing in the sun, while she insists on looking at something just a bit longer. I presume the Pavilian is in the vacinity of all the other shopping centres.

HaHa! Nobody is touching my feet. I am probably the only person I know, who hates massages. I wish I liked them, because I bet Thai massages are very good for you. Reply to this

I haven't been to them all but MBK was the cheapest and the food court was great. There is also a bowling alley and movie theater if you want some entertainment. Reply to this
