Recommendations for Overland Companies in Africa
13 years ago, March 4th 2011 No: 1 Msg: #130414
Hi

There are a ton of companies to choose from a few faves seem to keep popping up

- Absolute Africa
- Overland Africa
- Nomad
- Intrepid

Have you experienced the wonders of an overland trip in Africa? ...and if so what company did you use and can you recommend them... or not?

Hello Natasha, just a clarification - what parts of Africa did you want to see? If you are staying within a region of Africa (such as Eastern or Southern) then there are many reputable local operators as well.

Also, a gentle reminder for people posting in this thread, please do not drop links, urls, emails or phone numbers of recommended companies here - that info will be deleted.

Hi Shane, southeast Zimbabwe, Malawi, Tanzania, Kenya way. Have you done such a trip? Reply to this

I've been through Tanzania and Kenya, and am making early plans to visit Zimbabwe. When I travelled through Tanzania and Kenya I did so independently - so I made my way around myself, but then booked small tours before or after I arrived for such things as safaris.

I noticed that all of the companies you mention are not based in Africa. My general experience (which is actually quite limited) is that tend to be more expensive then companies based on the African continent when comparing like for like.

As a guide, and I cannot vouch for how good this company is, but a work colleague of mine has just booked with a group called Detour Africa for a South Africa-Botswana-Victoria Falls tour. Have a look at their prices, I'm not sure how they compare with the ones you mentioned.

Another thing to consider is that when choosing a company, be aware of the demographic of the other travellers. Some cater for only younger crowds, others for an older group. I had a friend who did a tour once and she was under 30, but the rest of the people were 40 years or older - so she did feel a little out of place, but still did enjoy herself immensely. I have heard of Detour in one of the reviews I read it was postive. I will check them out.

Yes I agree demographics such as ages and nationalities is important and something I plan to check out before committing. I've read quite a few positive reports about Africa in Focus.

Hope you enjoy your trip and thanks for your comments. Reply to this

I used Africa Overland Tours <snip> for a 20 Day Cape Town to Vic Falls Tour. I can highly recommend them. The guide and the tour were great and everything was very well organised.
