Travel the world (or some of it !) In a motorhome. Is it possible??

Advice, routes used, other bloggers stories would be much appreciated.

Hi all, looking for advice, tips etc. I am new to this site and this my first 'blogging' experience (Facebook doesn't count, does it?).
The reason I have joined is to hopefully be able to blog from all over the world at some date in the future.
Let me tell you a bit about myself; I am just over 40, two grown up children and happily married to Steve (aka Stevie Dave or SD!). I am an administrator for the NHS and SD is an accountant for the NHS. After over 20yrs working for the NHS, SD is to be made redundant. We have always enjoyed travel and have visited America often, cities far & wide, and also done the mandatory summer hols in Spain, Cyprus, Kefalonia etc. All of these have been wonderful and very memorable.
We have always wanted to travel more and further.
THE TIME IS NOW RIGHT!
Our idea; to travel far and wide in a motorhome, we own a caravan and have been avid campers all our lives, so are well suited to this type of accommodation.
Would really like to hear from folk who have traveled this way. any advice on routes etc would be appreciated.

Piece of cake. I have friends who have been all over the US, Canada and Mexico and will be heading to Europe soon.

Do you have specific questions?

Which country do you plan on doing first?

Hi and welcome to travelblog 😊

Australia is VERY doable by motorhome/camper van - lots of "grey haired nomads" here too. Renting a motorhome is becoming much more popular with people of all ages to see Aus..just a word though, our fuel prices and distances are HUGE so its an expensive but very rewarding way of seeing Australia. We have friends who rented a camper in New Zealand and traveled for 4 months and had a great time.
Many, many people travel this way. Reply to this

I have done a big loop from San Francisco then east over the mountains and down through Nevada, then Palm Springs to LA, then back up to San Francisco via Highway one. Even managed to fit in a visit to disneyland where they have an RV/motorhome site. Brilliant way to get around. You do need to allow a good number of hours for the familiarisation of the vehicle before you head off though. I've done it a few times and the process of checking in and then heading off in the RV seems to take ages. Reply to this

Hi,

As Liliram suggests above, anything is possible, you just have to believe you can do it! All of North America, most of Europe and New Zealand to date. Please feel free to scan the blogs and contact us if you need help.

Motorhoming - that's the life; freedom! Go for it!

The wonderful thing about all the RV parks-- at least in the US is you will make some great friends. There is a real community atmosphere.

Hi Vanilla, In my experience, the big difference is that motor-homing or camper-vans are an accepted way of travel in Australia, Europe & North America. But not in SE Asia ! Never ! I had ideas of doing the same in Asia, but Malaysian friends convinced me it would be an open invitation to thieves & robbers. You could never leave the van unattended, unless you hired a security guard. I have been to SE Asia many times, I have never seen one; here in Australia there are many many thousands (mine included). My Malaysian friends are fascinated by the motor home concept, how could people be so honest ? I found there are many minor scams there, that's normal, but a motor home is a big juicy target. However, last month in Laos I met a couple touring from India to Australia by BMW motor bike. They were street savvy after Bangladesh. Good luck !

Agree with Gary. Besides, I don't think there are designated camper van parks in many parts of Asia. Reply to this

Motorhoming is a great way to travel around and I wish you all the best for your future endeavors. Traveling in a motor home is quite famous now a days and it gives you plenty of flexibility. Also looking forward to do one such trip in future.

In the United States there are "clubs or groups" you can join to obtain lower fees in the RV parks. I don't know if other countries offer that or not. Not being an RV'er I'm not sure of all the details.

What I believe happens is if you want you can join "Group A" or maybe "Group B". If you have joined "Group A" and stay in "Group A" affiliated camp grounds your fees are reduced. You would have to do the math to figure if the fee to join the group makes it worth while. That will depend on how many places you are planning to go.

I hope this is helpful. Reply to this

Welcome to travel blog!

First of all, well done on making the decision to go travelling. Travelling can be a daunting experience, especially if you have ties at home but can be extremely worth it.

Can I make a recommendation...You should go travelling in Australia. I have recently travelled Australia in a camper van and had such a good time. <snip>There are plenty of attractions in South Australia. There’s bush walking in the Flinders Range, Barossa wine tasting and all the South Australia harbour attractions. It’s also really easy to find what to do in South Australia. Although I recommend the South Australia experience, the rest of Australia is also really beautiful.

Thanks!

Hi,I have not motorhomed, but when my wife I were in Vietnam last Fall we ran into a guy originally from Califonia who was going all over the world in his own motorhome. He told us that he was able to ship his home from country to country and continent to continent with just a little bit of effort on his part,He was part of a caravan made up of Europeans. It was a surprise to see a Clalfornia license plate in Vietman.Anyway I forget his name but he told us that there are a couple of magazines in print and also a website that may be just what you need.Hope that helped a little bit.Safe Travels

Welcome. We have travelled in a motorhome but aren't doing it at the moment. The idea of doing more though is certainly sitting there as an option. As others have said you can do it pretty easily in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

In the last year or so we researched building a vehicle that could take us through South America - and anywhere else really. Our conclusion was that the best vehicle would be a 4WD, old enough to be still reliable but not so new as to be full of bits that would require a specialised mechanic. We proposed to set up the vehicle so it could handle pretty rugged roads and country but still provide a comfortable and secure place to sleep, cook and eat. Unfortunately, we weren't able to get it sorted before our current trip to South America. Certain it can be done though and at a price that is not prohibitive.

With the right vehicle you could add a lot of Africa, most of Central and South America, most of Central Asia and Russia to your list of places to travel through. We know people who have brought vehicles through SE Asia as well but not all that recently. Reply to this

hello, i just read your post and was wondering if you have any more info about shipping the RV between continents? I am currently living in Guam and am building a GMC Suburban into my RV. I would really like to be able to travel with it instead of packing it in a container and basicaly mailing it. Any info on this would be great, Thank, Rick Reply to this

It can be done but I'm not sure how expensive it is. Years ago I was considering a job in Hawaii and wanted to take my car. It would have been more practical to buy a car once I arrived and sell it when I left. Reply to this
