Hi all,

I am planning on doing ecuador for 2 weeks then getting a bus (well, several buses) down into Peru and slowly make my way to Cusco to do the inca trail...

Where are some must-see places on the route down? Any towns / areas / villages worth stopping in for a couple of nights? Also very keen on outdoors / hiking / jungle etc... (I will have about 3 weeks in Peru in which I will also do the inca trail).

Will be grateful for any advice!

Thanks a lot😊

Hi

We crossed from Ecuador to Peru via La Balsa point, from there we reached to Jaen where we stayed overnight and then continued to Chachapoyas which is magnificent - has planty of archaeological/ scenic sites including the highest waterfall in Peru that can be arranged to see in a multi-day hike or in a day trip.

You can read more about the journey in our blog Hippobear - Across La Balsa Border to Peru.

You can continue from Chachapoyas to Moyobamaba (upper jungle) and even as far as Yurimongas for some more jungle, but remember that the distances are big and the roads are slow.

To go to Cuzco I would recommend to pass through the Andes. I think this can be an exhilarating and a breath taking trip because it is really off the beaten. I took the bus the opposite way (south to north) from Cuzco to Tarma via beautiful Ayacucho and Andahualyas. The scenic road, the terrain and the people made my heart beat harder get wider and grow fonder.

From Chachapoyas we took a bus to Peru and then to Tarma but I would recommend to travel via the Andes: Tarapoto to Huanuco and Tarma. On the way, Cerro de Pasco worths a visit at the stone forest (Busco de pidera) that is near Junin, three hours before Tarma. From Tarma a bus to Huancayo which worth a stroll and then a bus to Huancavelica to do some hiking.

"iPeru" - a very useful tourist office makes the trip so much easier.

You can e me via the blog for some more specific info.

"From Chachapoyas we took a bus to Peru" - just to correct - bus to Lima as it is already Peru 😉 Reply to this

Providing you start in Quito, I suggest, Quito (Mindo/Otovalo)
south to Banos, then to Tena, Riabamba, then the Border, Mancora-Trujillo-Haurez-Lima, try to get to Iquitos the biggest jungle city in the world with out roads in or out. Leave plenty of time for Cusco and it's surrounding areas. All these places I have mentioned have lots of informative blogs here on travelblog, have a blast Reply to this
