Take it or not to take it...

Hi there, just a quick question. I have a 70-300mm lens. I'm going to hong kong for a week and am determined to pack light. I know I probably won't use it but I desperately don't want to miss a thing. Im definitely taking my 14-42mm and my 40-150mm. Do I realistically need the 70-300mm?

Thanks :D Reply to this

If you're going to be mostly in Hong Kong, you probably will find yourself just fine with the first two lenses. If you were going on a safari trip I would vote for the big one, but in a city you should be fine as you can just get closer to your subjects! Reply to this

Agree, don't take the 70-300 lens. If you were attending a sporting event or going wildlife spotting, the bigger lens is a must. FYI, my usual kit is a 12-24 and 18-200 and that is plenty; I only took my 80-400 during my last trip due to more than a week of safaris in Kenya.

Even if you do want to get close to your subject and head up around the 200+ mark, you need to be aware that Hong Kong has so many sun-blocking skyscrapers, that getting enough light for these longer lengths may be problematic. Unless of course you have a beautiful and heavy f2.8 or f4 lens. Reply to this
