Advice on whether to take a portable water filter to India, I understand bottled water is readily available, but have heard that it is full of chemicals, what do other people reckon.
Reply to this Good question. I'm going to India and SE Asia and have bought one of these:

Claims to filter 350 litres of water on one cartridge. I thought it would be a good idea as a backup in case I don't have enough bottled water at a specific time e.g. at night
Reply to this hi,
I dont understand why r u worried about water filter. A standard hotel will serve u good filtered water.I don't advice u for bottled water. But you can find lots of water filter with international standard.
Reply to this Personally, I found the bottled water to be fine in India and very readily available - Aquafina is bottled by Pepsi, and that is considered to be a 'trusted brand'. Plus, bottled water is very cheap. However, if using a filter makes you feel more comfortable health-wise - then buy one - but I am unable to recommend any brands. Enjoy your travels!
Reply to this I agree with Shane, I never had any problems with the water in India nor did I bother to bring a water filter. Personally, I think you'll find there are more problems with eating things that surround local water ie. sandwiches with lettuce in it, grapes washed in local water, sauces made with local water, freshly washed dishes (using local water), eating ice cream (scooped with a scoop that soaks in local water).
I never ran out of bottled water even at night. They sell 1L bottles and practically every roadside stand will carry water. Just check to make sure the seal hasn't been broken and that the vendor isn't trying to reuse old bottles filled with local water.
If you really insist on buying a filter, MSR is a great brand that I've used for backcountry camping. www.mec.ca search for MSR MIOX Purifier
