All you young travellers out there beware that the smart folks in government here have decided to increase the minimum age for drinking alcohol to 25.
So far I don't know whether this has been implemented or not but basically the government has stated it doesn't care that it could be losing the tourism of back packers because it only wants quality tourists and a large quantity.
What it means is that if you don't have a load of cash to spend, they don't want you and don't care if you stop coming.
If I were you, I flick the bird and go to Vietnam, Malaysia, travel around Laos and Cambodia and shun this country because basically, we're not wanted because we won't really be lining the pockets of the corrupt politicians who have control of the larger resorts that only the rich can afford.
Not only that, you can't actually buy any booze after 12 am. You have to wait until 11 am and then you have three hours to buy it before they stop again between 2 and 5 pm.
Thailand used to be fun, but it is going waaaay down hill and more fun can be had elsewhere.

Do you have any idea about this idea will be successful? I think it is not solve the problem because the drinker who drive the car not just the age under 25 , and actually in the real situation, the teenager will not like to follow the regulation if he thinks that is not right to do. I think the way to solve is increase the penalty who drive the car when he drunk. Reply to this

I think it is silly to assume that raising the drinking age has anything to do with wanting to stop young travelers from coming to Thailand.

Thailand is one of the best places in the world to visit and anyone that would stop going there just because they couldn't get loaded every night is crazy. There are a million reasons to visit Thailand and alcohol consumption is so far down the list it is doesn't even register. Most people travel to experience new cultures, meet new people and generally find out more about the world we live in. Drinking is something you can do anywhere....don't let that stop you from visiting this amazing country. Reply to this

As an FYI... I just looked this up because I couldn't believe that any country in the world would have a 25 year old age limit for alcohol. There was a suggestion to raise it to 25, but it was only raised from 18 - 20.

Refer to this article about the new law, and do make sure to do some homework before posting blogs about important things to backpackers like the minimum drinking age. Reply to this
