does anyone know if its best to pre book peru rail from cusco to macchu pichu before leaving home or are there better deals to be had when i arrive in cusco?? would appreciate some feedback .

you can buy a trainticket via the website of Peru Rail. If you're travelling in the highseason I would recommend to do this. The prices on the internet are the same always.
What you can arrange when you are in Cusco is a whole trip to Machu Picchu wich includes the train, a hotel and entrance to machu Picchu.
