Travelling in Hawaii

We are travelling in Hawaii for two weeks in August and wondered if there are any suggestions how to do this affordably?

Hi, we are spending two weeks in Hawaii at the end of August as part of our trip and looking online it seems like it will be an expensive couple of weeks. Has anybody who has been there before got any tips for saving money (mainly on accomodation)? Thanks Reply to this

Hi Stuart and Rachel -

You may already be on your trip by now, but the best way I know to save on accommodation is to pick a place close to, but not on, the beach. Beaches in Hawaii are public so you can still access the same beachfront area that resort guests have access too even when you're not staying there. The last time I was in Honolulu I was attending a conference held at the Hilton Hawaiian Village (major expensive resort) but rather than paying out the nose to stay there I stayed at some lesser no-name place across the street. I walked 50 yards extra each day to access the exact same sand, shops, views, etc. Saved tons.

If you have a car, you might also want to look into vacation rentals outside the main attractions - you'll probably find better deals AND better beaches, especially on Oahu. Honolulu's beaches are nothing compared to the rest of the beaches on the island (in my opinion - they're often overcrowded and dirtier). If you get a place with a kitchen or kitchenette you can also prepare your own food - just be aware that a lot of non-island produced ingredients/staples will seem much more expensive than the mainland prices.

Thanks for the tips. We are going on Sunday and staying a week, we have rented a car for a few days, but from what you say day it may work out cheaper to hire it for the whole week and stay outside Honolulu in a cheaper place.

Thanks again. Reply to this
