Suggestions on the best place to get reliable travel insurance at a good price
13 years ago, June 28th 2010 No: 1 Msg: #114279
Hi Guys,
starting to plan my rtw trip and the mention of travel insurance keeps popping up. I've done a few online quotes and the cheapest I could find (from reliable insurance brokers) are around the £300-£350 mark. I didn't realise it would be so much.

Can anyone shed some light on how much they paid for travel insurance, where to get the best insurance from etc.

Thanks in advance.

Yas

Hi Yas

We went with World Nomads who I'm sure you have looked at already.. cheap they most certainly are not! They were however really good for us as they are one of the only companies who let you extend your insurance from outside your home country. They were also excellent at dealing with our claims quickly and efficiently and also cover most of the adventure sports you are likely to come across on your travels.

I can't remember exactly how much we paid but it was in the region of the £300 mark for around 18 months.. sorry to not have more positive news it stung us too!

Hope this helps a bit, I'll be interested to see if people got it a lot cheaper as we'll be looking again in the near future. Reply to this

Hi yas,

You can get insurance much, much cheaper than that but I doubt it will be anyway near as comprehensive. It really depends on what level of cover you are looking for. For us, we always make sure that all medical expenses would be covered and that we would be repatriated in the event of a disaster. We also like to be covered incase we cause an accident (say hit someone on a moped) that requires comp. What we don't worry about, and what really bumps the price up, is insurance for our belongings (apart from the tiny amount a basic insurance package covers you for) and adding any extra activities, such as rafting or paragliding.

We care about our health but not our possessions as they, after all, can be replaced and we like to think we can take care of them anyway. Not adding extra activities is a risk, we know, but then so are so many things in life and, at the moment, I can't afford them! So, we manage to get ourselves insured for just over £100. There are many companies offering insurance at around this price (just type cheap backpacker insurance into google) but what they offer DOES vary massively, you need to choose what's important for you.

Have fun and stay safe!! Reply to this

Thanks for the info guys. Sophie and Dale, I did check out World Nomads and got a similar quote to yours for 12 months which although a little expensive does cover you for quite a bit.

scotanddanny - You put forward a great case, medical is the biggie and possesions don't really count for too much, I'll have a netbook with me and a few other electronic items but those can, as you say, all be replaced...its a risk I'll be willing to take.

Thanks for the help Reply to this
