Want to travel for knowledge, not pleasure

In order to educate myself and others

I have recently discovered a new purpose to my life and that is to travel and understand the world. I want to be able to see the difference's between my world and their world and also the similarities. I am on a journey to try to start something; to hopefully be an influential voice (it may seem unrealistic, but I need to try...) in the future to help bring reason and mindfulness to my friends, family and fellow man/woman. I am 20 years old and still need a lot to experience in my life, so to get the questions to my answers, I might as well start somewhere. If anyone has thought about doing this and has done something like this, please reply to this post. I need help to find a starting ground. I just want to know where I can find people who would be open minded and willing to talk about this to a 20 year old. I want to see the world and absorb it.

I would just pick up a book and read about it, but its not the same as going out there and experiencing it first hand. Reply to this

Hello Max 😊

I deleted your post with the link in it, because you are a new member, and we unforunately have to give new members less benefit of the doubt, because of the number of spammers that are on internet sites these days.

I would just pick up a book and read about it, but its not the same as going out there and experiencing it first hand.

It is a good start though. Knowing a bit about a place will likely make people there more willing to talk with you you about their issues.

You could also try talking with people on the internet before you go about the things you want to learn about, so you get some idea of what taking about these things involves.

Also, it is good to talk on the internet but be more of a listener while travelling sometimes, because it is not safe to talk about everything for you and those you engage in discussion with, in every country. Also, talking on the internet is a good way to become aware that people and discussing certain things with them can be more complicated than you might initially think it will be.

Thank you for the notification and tips :D. Living in Canada, i get the opportunity to be within a mutli-cultural society and get to listen to stories of where these people came from and how they lived. Im still trying to get all the questions and figuring out which steps to take and I appreciate the help. Im training to become a compassionate listener because I know that is key to good and honest communication. I will take your advice in trying to communicate through the internet but for me, i am more of a face-to-face speaker, because in order to truly understand someone's words, you need to see their body-language and hear their expression. Btw thanks for quoting that, looks really cool :P Reply to this

ah, but knowledge IS a pleasure. I think it is great to start traveling as soon as you are able. I was lucky and started traveling at an early age (11 years) with my parents. This opened my eyes to new places and experiences. By the time I was 20 I had traveled throughout Mexico with friends, visited many Caribbean Islands and had finished traveling through Europe for the first time. It was largely these experiences that lead me to live outside the United States. I have been living in Central America now for the last 15 years.

Like you I travel to learn, to experience new cultures, to see as much of this world as I am able in the brief time that is given to us all. Travel for Knowledge and you will also find pleasure, I guarantee. Reply to this

Yes i should rephrase that. I believe in the same thing, i just didn't really put those two words together lol. I mean pleasure as in, clubbing, drugs, mindless sex etc. I value much more than that, of course going out and living it up is an experience as well, but it is not my core intention. Sounds like you had an amazing experience and I hope to go through an amazing one myself. Thank you for the wisdom. Reply to this

I love your purpose in traveling. That would be very much worthwhile. 😊

I suggest you start in a country that is very much culture rich and different from yours. Hmmm. Probably somewhere in Asia like the Philippines or Indonesia or you pick your choice. A lot of countries there are very rich in culture and would add well to the knowledge you have of the world. Reply to this

There are those that travel for entirely hedonistic reasons - but you'll find that the vast majority of travellers mix it up - a bit of pleasure, a bit of self improvement and a lot of new experiences.

But having learning and self improvement as the focus - it's a great goal. I think the best way to understanding a culture - is learn the language and live with people from that culture. Try learning some of the local skills, even just short courses on the cooking or art methods will give you deeper insights.

You could also try to learn tangible skills - there are so many opportunities while travelling or just set yourself up medium term 1-6 months and learn - some examples from my travels;

Photography - just take a camera and read and practice practice - one that really fits with travelling.

Learning languages - (I learnt Spanish, beginner Hungarian, and a little of about 5 others). You can study in a language school much more cheaply locally than in the west, you often can get a 1 and 1 session with a tutor, and it's a ton more motivating being there using what you learn each day.

Dancing - I learnt to Salsa and other Latin styles in Latin America.

Martial Arts - traditional Mauy Thai in Thailand - where better to learn?

Scuba diving - I took this to the professional level over 6 years.

You can combine learning two of these skills easily - Language + Physical seem to work best. Choose somewhere you can stretch out your savings and go. Do your research to pick where.

You need a way to earn cash in between your trips - so keep that in mind - if you can master a skill that brings in an income later - even better.

Once you've hit a certain level in any new skill - you can keep it up by joining clubs when ever you settle somewhere.

Hope that gives you some ideas.

I agree with Helal. You will grow as a person, become knowledge-rich and also see people from different cultures that will give yuou a picture of life in real. At the end of the day you will say that we are all the same, brothers and sisters. In every culture, you will find something similar. Reply to this
