I am going on a RTW trip in 4 weeks and im not quite sure how I should bring my money with me. Are Travellers Cheques the best option or should I just use my ATM card. I am travelling to Thailand for about 2 monthsthen Hong Kong and Australia, NZ, Hawaii and New York. Any suggestions or advice would be brilliant, thanks ! Reply to this

I'm typically inclined to just bring an ATM card, and for the places you mention, you shouldn't have any problems if you choose to do the same. It typically takes some real off-the-beaten-track adventuring to find a place where your ATM won't work. At worst, I've had a few situations where it took an hour or two of scrounging around for an ATM that accepted my card, but apart from that, it was easy and convenient. If you've got any of the big logos on your card - VISA, MasterCard, NYCE, etc. - you'll be fine.

The only caveat I'd offer is to check with your bank about fees for international withdrawals. These can fluctuate pretty wildly from one bank to the next - from no fee to a set fee to a percent commission from each withdrawal - and if yours seems especially money-hungry, you might want to reconsider.

Hope that helps to get you started!

I've been travelling RTW for a few months using only my ATM card for money. For all the countries you've mentioned you will have zero problem with ATM assuming you're on one of the major network (Plus/Visa or Mastro/Cirrus/Mastercard). If you want to go off-the-beaten track in places where you're not sure if ATM are gonna be available, ask around and if unsure then just withdraw enough money from a big city before leaving.

If you were planning to spend a few months in Congo's countryside then maybe ATM is not gonna cut it, but aside from that it should be no problem (except Iran, of course, whose bank system is cut off from the internation system by diplomatic sanction).

So what would one do if she/he decides to go off the trails?

Just withdraw extra money from a big city before you go? I hope that isnt the only answer because thtas just asking for trouble... Reply to this
