Any recommendations for great Bangkok hostels in a safe area?

We're heading to Bangkok in a couple of weeks, want accomodation in a safe enough area away from the protesters that is clean, cheap and good location, any ideas?

Same as above, anyone any suggestions, we're looking for a room for about 500 baht in a safe area so we can explore a little of Bangkok but be near the Koh San Road. Thanks Reply to this

are you flying in or busing in?? there are some guesthouses near the airport, which has been blocked by military checkpoints, we were told that it's very safe and is about 500 or 600 baht I think, There are quite a few areas in Bangkok but I can not for the life of me remember any names (their a bit confusing I must admit) Maybe can give some insight about the situation??

or there's a few blog posts up right now about it. I think though that if you go looking for action you'll see some, but if you just keep yourself updated on the news (I've just been googling thailand demonstration in google news and scanning through) and know where not to go you should be fine.

Hey guys. Cheers for the info. We're flying into Bangkok on May 15th. Ideally we'd like to be near Khao San Road, without actually being on it. Near the madness but not kept awake by it! We're only going to be there for a few days before we head up north.

Hope you're enjoying Malaysia.

(hope this doesn't double-post....dodgy internet where we are). Reply to this

Hey Guys, glad to see you got on your way eventually.... 😊

I think Soi Rambuttri would be ideal for what you're after... It's very close to KSR (i.e. 1-2 mins walk) but isn't so busy and has a whole host of accomodation options and restaurants on it. Not sure where it sits in relation to demonstrations though, someone else will have to advise on that.

What time are you getting into Bangkok. If it's late I'd probably book ahead but if you're getting there in the morning or early afternoon I'd just rock up and have a look around for a place that's in budget and you like the look of. We've never had a problem in the past (apart from one time when we arrived at 1am and spent an hour finding a bed).

We're gonna stay at the New Siam 2 when we go there in July, it's maybe a little above your budget, but they tend to be a good place to start to get an idea of what's available (there's also a New Siam 1 and 3), . We've stayed there a few times and it's ok (we've got two kids now so definately don't want to be traipsing around for a place to stay).

Safe travels guys...

Cheers - glad to be away finally.

We've come across one called Lamphu House on Soi Rambuttri. Got good reviews and 630 baht for an a/c double. Looks like a winner. Ta. One week down, 51 to go! Reply to this

ooo your going to be there well before us, I think the earliest we plan to leave Malaysia and come back to Thailand is the 16th, hopefully the latest being the 22nd but you never know. Where are you headed after northern Thailand? if your planning on doing a trek I would reccomend checking out Nice Place 2. We went with them and had a fantastic time!! They also give you discounted room rates after the trek and one free night before the trek!! Reply to this

We're doing about a month in Central/Northern Thailand, then a couple of weeks in Laos and the same in Cambodia, back to Bangkok to collect a friend and down to the South to island hop for a month. Then down to Malaysia towards Singapore and onto Oz and Nz.

sounds like you two are having a good time, anywhere we should not miss out on at all that you have been to? (we have been reading your blog by the way) Reply to this

There is a simple rule in Bangkok these days....if a taxi doesn't want to go somewhere...there is maybe a simple security issue for it.

Look like the negociations have finally started, could end up soon...maybe.

One simple point...Thai are nice people, even when they demonstrate...it's when it turn violent that you want to move out...but they are well organized to tell you to move out...and history has prove that violent events are very limitied in location and time, therefore pretty easy to avoid.

One thing for sure....for those loving shopping, the next few months will be nice, the economy has a lot of catch-up to do! Reply to this

I was in the Sukhumvit Road area just a few days ago and it was business as usual. Hotels, bars, restaurants, malls, shops, supermarkets all open. Lots of street vendors just waiting for you to show up. In this sukhumvit Road area there are hostels and other cheap guest house/hotels available. You can visit Khao San Road from this area if you want by meter taxi. I think Sukhumvit Road area is safer than the KSR area, so far no protests in that area. You can find a hotel with air starting around 600 baht if you want..

You could also just skip Bangkok entirely if you want and head out to other cities in Thailand. My advice is to hold off booking any hotels ahead of time so you can make your choice with the latest news available. During low season you can get a hotel with a walk-in or even a telephone call from the airport if you want.

Good luck. Reply to this
