Seeking guidance on how to book accommodation. Concerned to use my credit card on unsecured wifi at hostel.
Hi fellow travellers,
I hope someone can help please.
I just arrived in Argentina staying at a hostel with free wifi (which i booked back home). I now wish to move on to more hostels over the next 6 months in various countries but I am wary of using the free (unsecured) wifi when placing a deposit on my credit card. I understand that I can seek accommodation upon arrival at these locations but would like to book ahead where possible.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
The chance of somebody stealing your credit card information from an unsecured wifi link is extremely small, lower than having somebody duplicate it in a bar / restaurant etc - the chances of which are also pretty slim. We travelled for 6 months in south America regularly using our own netbook pc connecting via wifi in hostels, cafe's etc to make bookings on HostelWorld and HostelBookers without any problems at all.
I concur. I also just finished up six months in south america, and used my laptop the whole time to book hostels ahead, never had my credit card info compromised. I booked mostly through hostelworld.com, and I believe they even ask you for your security code in order to put down a deposit.
Thanks very much guys! This is great info, I will go ahead & book our next stop now. 😊
