Hi Danielle,

What sort of time frame are you thinking of, and how organised do you prefer to be ahead of time?

You could look into return rentals where you're bringing a car back to it's original location for the rental company, or check the Air New Zealand website for their 'Grab A Seat' specials. These get as cheap as $1 but go very quickly and have limited date availability. Reply to this

NakedBus and Intercity are a couple of bus networks which have cheap deals if you book early enough.

Hi Dani

I've been rsearching for my trip this September and found there's quite a few ways to get around NZ 😊
- There's renting (or buying and reselling) a van
- Hop on hop off experience buses Magic, Stray & Kiwi Experience
- Network bus companies Naked and Intercity mentioned by Jo.
and hitchhiking, from what I've read, is quite safe if need be as well

The travel guide on this site as well as travellerspoint.com are two that are helping me plan. Happy travels 😊 Reply to this

Wow! Been looking at the Naked bus company fares and have to ask, is it too good to be true? $1 for pretty much any journey? Reply to this

They often advertise them here - just check any conditions for the one you want to book. Mind you, at $1 they're worth grabbing even if you're not sure of your dates. Reply to this

I rented a car for the South Island and on my 2nd day picked up a hitchhiker (he looked young like me at the time) and we ended up travelling together, and splitting costs!! Risky but worked out really well, we had a great time together. So if you run out of time, don't hesitate to rent a car to make up some time. I picked one up right off the ferry on the South Island and drove it around to Christchurch.
Have a great time! Reply to this

You nutcases! As a true kiwi, I wouldn't pick up a hitchhiker. But we've hosted plenty of people at our home who have been travelling on the naked bus, and they've loved it. It provides relatively good flexibility but I believe not all trips are taken during winter months, so care needed on frequency here! You can go somewhere and then realise you can't get back for a week because the bus doesn't come back there till the following week! There are excellent bus services through intercity coachlines too. These are regular and reliable. ttp://www.intercity.co.nz/passes/ni.php You can intersperse trips this way - some with naked bus, some with intercity. Also there are some terrific flight discounts now. See www.webjet.co.nz. Subscribe then you'll get the offers across your email. Happy travelling! Reply to this

Dani, Naked Bus is for real. I have friends that have gotten $1 fares Auck to Wellington and $19 return.
Mind you you do have to book online and as soon as.
Have a great trip in our Fantastic country. Reply to this
