I am traveling through Europe in July/ August, i plan to have a yoga mat and tent. I am traveling lite and would like to experience as much as possible! I understand in some places i will have to stay in hostels but where possible i want to sleep outside under the stars.
I have heard of people using the ferry system around Croatia and Greece (sleeping on board over night to cut down costs.) to travel from one place to another. Recommendations?
Is the Eurail a good option for transport?
This post is very broad, I would like anyones advice or tips on doing everything and anything through Europe. Places to go and things to do! The cheaper the better.

Thank you. Reply to this

Ferries in and to Greece are not that cheap, if you search the web you can get the prices for the routes you are interested in. If you are planning to come to Greece on a very limited budget don't go to the islands which have a higher price level generally. On the mainland you can travel by bus and train which is much cheaper, there are many interesting and nice places to go. Peloponese is an attractive area with lot's to see and easy to get around. In smaller places outside the main tourist drag you will be able to find places to pitch a tent without any problems - just ask in the kafeneio! Reply to this

This statement may seem kinda wacky, but I would generally consider Europe the most challenging travel destination due to cost and its constraint on options. Perhaps slightly ironic since many tourists see it as springboard destination to the more 'difficult' challenges that may lay ahead.

Your question is difficult to answer because you haven't listed an itinerary. So for example, if you plan to see most of Europe in a summer whirlwind you'll end up sleeping on trains and ferries and generally spend a lot of time in train stations. AND spending a lot of money.

My tips; pick a region, take things slower, utilize supermarket food (which can prove rather exotic and exciting as you pass through different countries) and camp. But remember a tent means you always have a home, and if you can find a quiet spot behind some trees you've saved on a nights accommodation.

Ryanair and Easyjet are very cheap if you book ahead, but again not if you plan to visit half of Europe. Hitching can be adventurous and cheap, and you'll meet some cool people. But if you're only in Europe for 6 weeks you don't wanna be stuck on the autobahn with your thumb out.

Camping and couchsurfing are cheapest accomadation and I recommend both of them. However, Europe is fairly expensive if coming from the USA, so a long 2 month trip trying to experience as much as possible can be quite expensive....but "experiencing as much as possible" and "expensive" are definitely relative terms/phrases. I think travelling around Europe with the train is a good option. It is cheap and Countries are well connected by railway, so comfortable too. But if you decide to go to Greece, Italy and Croatia it is another opsion to take a ferry. From Italy, Venice, to Greece, Patras (close to Athens), you can have tickets are around 50 euros and Ferry tickets are around 20-25 from Athens to the islands of Greece. Athens has very nice places, monuments to see but I believe if you come to Greece you should see some of the islands. Also, Islands are more safe for camping. You can find some ifo on them from this site: http://www.mygreektrip.com/ . Also, think about some nordic countries. They are to be seen too.

YOU DONT SAY WHERE IN EUROPE YOU WANT TO GO.I LIVE IN RUSE,BULGARIA,AND IT IS STILL ONE OF THE CHEAPEST PLACES......IN THE CURRENCY OF BEER AND FAGS .....1 BEER IS ABOUT 60P GBP AND A PACKET OF FAGS IS ABOUT 2 POUNDS.FOOD IS CHEAP AND SO IS BUS TRANSPORT.THERE ARE HOSTELS IN MOST OF THE MAIN CITIES,COST VARY FROM 10 EURO A NIGHT UPWARDS.THERE IS NO HOSTEL IN RUSE AND IM CONSIDERING OPENING MY HOUSE AS A HOSTEL DUE TO THE INCREASING NUMBER OF BACKPACKERS WHO COME HERE EVERY YEAR ENROUTE TO ROMANIA.LET ME KNOW IF YOUR PASSING THIS WAY AND WED BE HAPPY TO SEE YOU.
INFACT ANYONE HEADING THIS WAY.....ID APPRECIATE SOME FEEDBACK AS TO HOW MANY TRAVELERS ARE THINKING ABOUT HEADING THIS WAY. Reply to this
