Hitchhiking Across Canada

For people who have, or are interested in hitchhiking across Canada. Hints Tips and Suggestions.

I am looking for stories from people who have hitchhiked across Canada. The good, the bad, hints, tips, suggestions... I'm hoping to do it in the next year or so. What did you take with you? How long did it take? Any trouble with laws? Anywhere more difficult to hitch a ride? How long was the average wait for a hitch? I'm looking for information about the experiences of both males and females hitching alone and/or together. Thanks. Reply to this

In response to: Msg #106265 Hitch Hiking across Canada was one of the best experiences of my life I left Ontario on my way to BC with my little sister I was 28 at the time and she was 24. I hitch hiked my way home alone and she stayed out West. We had no trouble with the law or people everyone was super nice and super helpful it took us about a week to make it to Alberta and another day or two to make it to Vancouver BC (from Toronto) . We did however always have weapons on us. strapped to our legs for protection, although neither of us had any issues. My sister and I had no issues getting rides probably because we are two attractive young girls with giant hiking backpacks who showered regularly and made sure we looked presentable most of the time... tho I would say Wawa is known for being a place hard to get out of... also in my experience its easy to get into a city and a huge pain to get out of one. its legal to hitch hike along the trans Canada highway, but there are a few towns that it is illegal to pick up hikers... mostly in BC, but with enough persistence eventually someone will stop. just make sure to not wear black look like you are having a good time and have some kind of sign usually helps.

best of luck to all my fellow hitch hikers Reply to this
