Hiya.
I'm planning to go to Asia in the fall 2010. I would really love to do some volunteer work for a couple of weeks in all of the above mentioned countries. I would prefer to work with children, but any other kind of work would be very much appreciated! I have surfed the net and haven't managed to find any kind of volunteer work that doesn't cost loads of money, which I sadly wont be able to afford with my low budget. Therefor I would love to have some help - if anyone has some experiences or knows of any volunteer work in Dar that does not cost too much.

Please help 😊

hi Amy,
When volunteering in asia it is best not to go with any of the organisations on the internet. I've heard from some volunteers that they spent over $1000 for a placing and then found out that all the money went to 'administrative costs'. So its lucky you can't afford it!

The best tip I can give is go with your instints. Go and have a look at different NGOs and see which one you can relate to and feel positive about. It means that you need to commit a bit of time to staying in one place.

Also, I have had many conversations about (and with) volunteers about who it is benefitting when foreigners volunteer. Is it the community or are people just trying to feel good about themselves? These conversations altered my attitude towards volunteering.

To really help, many orphanages struggle to meet the everyday costs of feeding the kids. Many people donate big things that they can brag to friends about, but the kids are hungry because they can't afford rice! Maybe before you come to Asia, raise some money between friends and buy some rice or other food for struggling orphanges (beware of tuk-tuk scams!). Keep your eyes and mind open and you'll find the best way that you can help.

Good luck and I hope you can find the organisation that suits you. 😊 Reply to this

If you are seeking free & low cost volunteering opportunities in Thailand then your first stop should be Volunteer Work Thailand

You should be able to find a project that matches your requirements on this website.

Hi Amy,
Have you started your travels yet? My friend and i have just finished a weeks volunteer work at Go Vap orphanage in HCMC. it was incredible.the kids were amazing..and it was for free too, proper volunteering no ridiculous fees.
please visit vietnam volunteer network.com Kim was an adoptee from the orphanage just before the war and grew up in london, shes SO helpful and supportive and can really help you with your volunteer needs in Vietnam.

Apart from this, i could suggest helpx.net which is an exchange program, for 5 hours a day of your work your usually given food and board..though not in all cases.

We tried to find opportunity in the Philippines when we were there, but with most internet resources on the Philippines, we couldnt find alot!

enjoy your travels! Reply to this
