May, 2010, after repositioning cruise with port calls in Funchal, Cadiz, Malaga & Alicante, debarking, Thursday morning in Barcelona 3 nights in Barcelona, departing Sunday noon, rental car to Catalayud (5.5 hours, well reviewed convenient hotel for overnight stop). Monday AM, drive to Toledo (3.5 hours). Monday & Tuesday nights in Toledo, Wednesday afternoon drive to el Escorial (1.5 hours). Thursday, visit el Escorial, then drive 1 hour into Madrid, staying 4 nights near Plaza Mayor. Monday afternoon DPT MAD for DFW.
Reply to this Based on some alternatives and a suggestion from a local, I've made a couple of changes, driving a little farther to stop for the night at a parador in Siguenza instead of in Calatayud, then to Segovia for an afternoon and morning of sights, before a short drive to el Escorial to see the Monasterio the next day, then on to Toledo for 2 nights, before going on to Madrid, cutting our stay there to 3 nights, one of those risk/benefit equations. I hate to lose a night in Madrid, but have always wanted to at least see a bit of Segovia.
Now, had I an extra week......
