Volunteering in India

Looking to volunteer in India
14 years ago, February 4th 2010 No: 1 Msg: #102475
We're going to India later this year and are hoping to get the chance to volunteer with an organization. We're really not picky about what we're doing, not too picky about the organization, as long as it's an ethical organization that is there to help the people who need it most I'm ok with it!

We don't have much training in the areas that I assume are most needed for volunteering (medical training of any sort, or developmental or anything) but we are hard working and only want to help where we can. I have never done anything like this before, Scott has through a youth group when he was much younger.

I'm wondering if anyone can make any suggestions about some good areas or groups to go to, and if anyone has done this sort of thing, anywhere or specifically in India, and could give some advice.

we've been looking a bit at one site, volunteering in India, but I want to be as educated as possible when I get there, so I can prepare myself for whatever is needed of me. Reply to this

Hi Scott and Kristy,

I am currently working as a volunteer at the Sambhali Trust in Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

The Sambhali Trust is an NGO which was formed 3 years ago and has 2 main projects where volunteers can get involved.

Jodhpur Empowerment project - women and girls of 15-22 are taught English (through foreign volunteers), Hindi and a variety of sowing techniques and as well as cultural activities and workshops. The 2 year course hopes to raise awareness in health and educational topics as well as vocational training.

Setrawa village project - A centre was established to enable the young children between 6-12 years old to have a better standard of English, as well as having a sowing class and drop-in centre for the women of the village.

Please look at www.sambhali-trust.org for more information.

Hi! You could try 'Teach for India' and 'Aakansha'; these are groups that help educating slum children.

Also, there in Mother Teresa's institute in Kolkata and other NGOs like Cry...

Hope these would help! Reply to this

Thanks!! that does help. We were hoping to do something to help people, I know there are some volunteer places where you work in the fields etc, but I would rather do something with the people, learn from them as well as teach them. I'll try those first two!! 😊 Reply to this
