For me it is a good day, normally celebrated with family, friends and a BBQ. For me it is a day to celebrate how diverse and multicultural our country is. I know that some indigenous Australians refer to it as "Invasion Day". So, it depends on your own perspective, but I think it is becoming more inclusive each year.
Reply to this I can completely understand why people refer to it as "Invasion Day" and why it is controversial for many Australians. I think Australia Day is a great holiday and we do celebrate how diverse and multicultural Australia is as Rob & Lorenza said. We could however easily celebrate it on the 27th January and then it would stop being controversial and people wouldn't feel guilty about celebrating being Australian.
Reply to this I think some might actually be celebrating it on the 27th. I saw on another site somebody announcing that today is Australia Day, then I was surprised that Wikipedia says it is the 26th.
Reply to this Mell it has been a bit cold here at home also, only about 35, we are waiting for it to warm up a bit! Cheers!
Reply to this Is that 35 Celcius? It is always that temperature in Australia, isnt it. 😉 Another few inches of snow has fallen here in Munich in the last 24 hours.
Reply to this Yes 35 celcius is pretty normal ... except in winter when it is 25 celcius!
Reply to this Australia Day was just another excuse for a public holiday when I lived there. I didn't even know the significance of it and the last time I actually CELEBRATED it I think I was 12. But being in England for it this year it made me really homesick and sad I had no-one to share it with.
