Should I leave my job and go abroad for a month? What are your views and opinions?

Hi everyone,

I am in a little dilemma. I have the opportunity to travel abroad for one month soon, just for a holiday with family and to relax. I am in two minds on if I should go or If I should not go.

My main concern is my job. At the moment I am not working in the field I would like to, I basically work in retail in a low paid, minimum wage, part time job. It’s one of the jobs I got when I finished university and got my degree, I don’t really see myself staying in this job for life, and do not really enjoy it too much. I see it as a job which just basically pays me. I have been in this job for nearly a year now, and have not really applied for anything since.

Now I have this opportunity to go abroad for one month. It is something that would give me a break, something which I think I need. Also it could give me the motivation to apply for better jobs suited to my career goals and educational background when I come back.

The problem or fear I have is I may have no job to come back to when I return, as I don’t think they would allow me to take a month of work to go on holiday. And my main concern is that I may not find work straight away when I come back, due to the recession. Therefore may be stuck. Although my job a simple job, at the end of the day it does pay me money.

So I have these two minds, one saying I should go, and one saying I should not go.

I just need some thoughts and opinions, and what you all would do if you were in my position?

Thanks

Hello Dean 😊

You dont know for sure that they wont give you a month off. Why not ask for unpaid leave.

You can volunteer abroad and use the experience to your advantage. In a tough job market, having some volunteer work on your CV can give you an edge. You can also see the country is a way that no tourist can see it. It sounds lie you will be on a budget since you are uncertain about life when you return. There are very inexpensive ways to volunteer other than through large, international, for profit, volunteer organizations. I think that over time, you will regret not traveling if you not to travel, but I admit that I have not made many financially wise decisions (but don't regret it either).

Best of luck. Reply to this

If you don't go you will regret it for sure.
There will always be an opportunity/job around the corner when you get back as long as you go out and look for it.
Having a bit of travel on your cv is also good for general experience as well.
where is it you are potentially going? Reply to this

Hi Dean,

When are you planning to go? Start looking for a new job and if you get any offers tell them can't start until you return - it is very normal for companies to wait 1 month before a new employee starts, as they need to give notice to their old employer. And I'm sure that if you do go on holiday without a job you will be able to find "a low paid, minimum wage, part time job" until something else comes along.

If it were me, i would think f**k it and go! You never know what other opportunities are around the corner.

Go for it. Discuss this with your supervisor and then ask for a leave of absence. You can get another job, especially at MW when you return. Many employers are looking for a way to cut payroll a little and you may have such an employer. Just be open and candid with your discussion. If your employer will not accommodate you, the job may not be worth keeping after all.Go and have a great time! Reply to this
