Taman Negara: Merapoh or Kuala Koh

We will be visiting Taman Negara coming summer. We have 3 nights/2 days and will arrive from Kota Bahru on the way to Kuala Lumpur.
Can anyone tell us which location Merapoh or Kuala Koh we should choose?
We like 2-3 hrs trails and riverview. Also we like to know if one really has to rent a car to get there or is public transport a viable option?
