We are looking for other families with children who decided to travel around the world for one year with a WYT. Which are the best countries to visit, also in terms of security? Which is the best and cheap Alliance to choose? What about the luggage to carry? How did children accept lessons given by their own parents? In some countries we also would like working as volunteers, has anyone had this experience? Our trip should also help us to choose another country where to live. Thanks for your help, we hope to be able to leave next June 2010. Reply to this

Hello Manuela 😊

I found Thailand a great place to be with my daughter. People are incredibly child friendly and help you with everything, and even watch out for you, so your kids come to no harm. I was there when she was 5 and when she was 6. We will be going there again this year. She is now 9. Thailand is also very inexpensive. You and your family could stay in a couple of beach huts on an island for around 10 Euros per night between you, or in inexpensive guesthouses in the various towns for the same.

I also went to India, Cuba, the Netherlands, Ireland, Germany, England with my daughter. For those ones, my boyfriend(her father) was also with us. Cuba and Ireland are also very child friendly.

For luggage, I would travel as light as possible as regards things like clothes, but take lots of drawing materials, play clay... to keep the kids amused or you will never get any rest. I would try to teach them that when you are sitting in cafes or having dinner, that is the time to play with these things, because they will likely want to go on boats, horse rides... or whatever else is available all day. Well, that is what my daughter is like anyway. 😊

I traveled quite a bit with my children when they were little. They both had little backpacks that they were responsible for that contained crayons, paper, Play-Doh, and a few toys of their choosing. I liked the responsibility factor and it always gave them something to do during down times (airport, hotel, etc..)

This was years ago, but each of my boys also carried a disposable camera with them in their backpacks. They thought it was really cool to be able to take their own pictures of our adventure.

I also pinned ID information to the inside of their shirt and backpack, in case for some horrible reason we got separated from each other. It never happened but traveling with them on the public transit systems of Tokyo gave me this idea.

I traveled through Okinawa, Japan, and Germany with my children and all three places seemed to be very kid friendly to me, especially the Asian countries.

Have a wonderful trip...it will be an amazing adventure for you and your family!
