Hey, I am flying into Buenes Aires (BA) on the 21st December, meeting up with a friend and we have until Dec 26th to kill before we meet the rest of our travelling friends who arrive also in BA but not until Dec 26th....Where should we go for these few days heading out from BA & where should we spend christmas? We both love fun heading out, but ideally we would love a typical fun South American chrissie? Should we try and head towards Brazil? Any ideas? We only have a few days to kill before we have to be back in BA? Cheers, "Vet" Reply to this

I do not know about BA; but in Brazil you will only find good parties etc if you know someone here. People tend to go out after family dinner at dec, 24. Good lucky! Reply to this

Hi Jason.

You welcome!

I feel like saying this too.... i do not understand why foreigns want so much to go to Rio de Janeiro and carnival there!

Anyway... about Rio, be extra carefull there. Watch over you shoulders every sec you spend there. I am local, a brazilian girl i mean, and i am scare to go to Rio. Many brazilians are!! Don´t, under any circumnstances, go to the favelas... not even close by. Do not carry anything with you that people can see you are carring. Avoid back packs. Do not walk around with eletronics in your hands. Just remember that can be a thief in every corner and foreigns are like sitting ducks to them. The other day a foreign was killed in front of his mother eyes because this man wanted his back pack. That was in the day light at Copacabana beach.

Believe me. Your wish to go to Rio is all about midia. There are wonderfull places here, not only Rio. And mostrly are very safe to be at!!! You just may not know about yet.

If you are going there to carnival, i can give you a few tips more close to the event.

It is a very interesting trip you have in mind. Let us all know about it!

Take care

muchas gracias bibi, pero voy a visitar el carnaval en salvador en la provendencia BAHIA....

yes i have heard from lonely planet guide and thorn tree forum that rio, caracas and lima and probably the 3 most dangerous cities in latin america.

i have plans to see a lot more of brasil than just this place - Sao Paulo , Minas Gerais, Parati, Salvador, Recife, Natal, Fazenda de Lagoa....

do you think i will get along better by speaking my queens english or my intermediate level spanish at a lower speed. you guys have a lot of words that are similar to spanish in portugese like cuidad/cidade...

thanks for your words of wisdom, maybe you can check my travel blog and give me some more advice if i decide to go to rio nearer the time which will be end feb, march or april next year. Reply to this

I envy you Jason... i am surrounded by countries where spanish is spoken but i just can´t speak nor understand this language. People here goes to classes to learn it. I think you will find more easy the communication in english. I mean, more people will understand english, but i am sure you will find who understands spanish, french, italian etc. As the matter of fact, depends where you are, you will only find people who does not speak portuguese !!!! lol

And i envy you even more because you are going to all this places. The transportation in Brazil is not good at all. It is deff. not like travel around in Europe. That makes trips here expensive, but as you are not payied in brazilian reais you should be fine. lol

Hope you buy your "mortalha" (i think that is the name) to the carnival em Salvador no Estado da Bahia... otherwise, you will be among thousands of people with no bathroom around. Figure the scene. I will never do that in my life. With that "mortalha" you will at least be at the same place but with this kind of rope reserving a space with bathroom etc. It is not expensive at all. You just have to pick one of the "trios elétricos" (that trucks that have the band in a parade) and buy the mortalha for that. My advice is "chiclete com banana" or "daniela mercury" or "yvete sangalo" !!!

But my real advice is: go to Atlantida in the South for canival.... lol

It is not fair to say to you that i know. Well, they say that Parati has a great carnival too.

If you want to, you can have more than one carnival here as carnival in SSA (Salvador) last more than a month! I think maybe Recife is like that too. Normally, carnival was suppose to last only 04 days. As we say here in São Paulo, people in Bahia does not like to work too much. lol

About the other places, i will do as you say and take a look to your travel blog then.

I love my country very much and i would love to help you more if i can.

Think about the mortalha... if you got interested, i ask my friends who lives there about it, ok?

See you Reply to this
